No. 5 Duke Sweeps Elon Wednesday

DURHAM, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team collected its second sweep of the 2020 season Wednesday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over Elon in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 2-0 in the young season while the Phoenix fall to 1-3.

"We had a good first match last week in Arizona but to be here at a place that has been great to us over the last few years and get our first win of the year is good," head coach Jamie Ashworth said. "We also have some new kids to get familiar with playing here. We had three people in our lineup today that haven't played a dual match in this building so it was a good experience for them before we head into the weekend which is a big deal for us. I'm exciting about the win and proud of how we played and competed."

Duke got off to a quick start by securing the doubles point for the second time this season. Rookie Chloe Beck and graduate Summer Dvorak was the first off the court for the Blue Devils with a fast 6-2 victory on court three over Elon's Shauna Galvin/Nicole Shiau before Duke's top court of freshman Yasmine Mansouri and sophomore Margaryta Bilokin defeated Olivia Archer/Alex Koniaev, 6-2.

After clinching the doubles point, senior Meible Chi and junior Hannah Zhao secured a 6-3 win over Sofia Edo/Victoria Saldh to conclude doubles.

The Blue Devils continued their strong performances into singles as Chi and Bilokin were the first two off without dropping a game. Chi, ranked No. 77 by the ITA, downed Saldh (6-0, 6-0) on court two minutes before No. 67 Bilokin swept Archer (6-0, 6-0) on Duke's third court.

Rookie Beck, tabbed No. 25 by the ITA, was next off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Elon's Kiana Rizzolo on court four.

Fellow freshman Mansouri featured a 6-4, 6-0 win on Duke's top court over Koniaev before Dvorak's 6-3, 6-0 court six victory over Shiau. Rounding out Duke's second sweep of the year was Zhao's 6-3, 6-2 win against Edo on court five.

The Blue Devils will stay in Durham to host the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Jan. 25-26.
