DURHAM, N.C. – Five student-athletes of Duke field hockey have been chosen to represent the red, white and blue among various U.S. Women's National Team rosters for 2020.
"I am thrilled for the Blue Devils who have recently been selected to our National Teams," said head coach
Pam Bustin. "Their commitment and love for the game are evident; and from which our U.S. programs will benefit."
Senior
Haley Schleicher was named to the senior USWNT team on Sunday night while senior
Jillian Wolgemuth was selected for the development team on Monday. Freshmen
Hannah Miller and
Josie Varney will accompany sophomore
Leah Crouse on the U-21 USWNT, as announced Tuesday afternoon.
"At each level – Josie, Leah, Hannah, Jill and Haley – will continue to grow through their international experiences and develop a deeper relationship with the sport. Playing at our national elite level is such an honor and hard-earned opportunity."
As announced earlier this week, Schleicher earned a spot on the senior roster following previous stints with the U-17 and U-19 squads. Schleicher finished out her collegiate career with 31 points, appearing in 84 games as a Blue Devil. She earned All-ACC First Team and NFHCA All-South Region First Team honors during her final season in which she racked up 18 points.
Wolgemuth is coming off a strong senior campaign in which she led Duke's backfield to the seventh-best goals against average in the country (1.13). The Pennsylvania native was named to the NFHCA All-America Third Team, All-South Region First Team and All-ACC First Team during her final season after starting in all 21 games. She concluded her career with 78 appearances, including 72 starts, and recorded 11 points. Wolgemuth has played for the U-17, U-19 and U-21 national teams.
Previously competing for the U-17 and U-19 teams, Miller was named to the U-21 squad following a dominant rookie season. The Malvern, Pa., native started in all 21 games and secured NFHCA All-South Region Second Team honors. Miller tied for a team-high 11 goals and finished second in points (22) in 2019.
During her freshman campaign, Varney earned the start in 19 of 21 games she played in at midfield. As a member of the U-19 team, Varney claimed a gold medal at USA Field Hockey's Young Women's National Championship last summer and has also played for the U-17 team.
Crouse earned her way onto the U-21 team after leading the Blue Devils' offense with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points during her sophomore season. The Virginia Beach native started in 20 games and notched All-ACC Second Team honors. Crouse previously played on the national stage, competing on the U-17 and U-19 squads.
Assistant Coach
Ralph Boersma will also be involved with the organization, serving as an assistant coach with the U-18 USWNT.
"We will continue to help support their endeavors throughout our Duke spring hockey season and look forward to great improvement and exciting play!"
