DURHAM, N.C. – The fifth-ranked Duke women's tennis team kicks off the 2020 season Tuesday, Jan. 14 on the road at Grand Canyon in Phoenix, Ariz.
Tuesday marks the first meeting between the Blue Devils and the Lopes as Grand Canyon played to a 10-9 overall record that featured a trip to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament championship.
The Blue Devils have won 12 season openers in a row and start the season away from Durham for the second straight year. Last year, Duke opened the season in the Bahamas against ninth-ranked Oklahoma State and came away with a 5-2 victory.
Prior to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) releasing updated team rankings for 2020, the ITA came out with its final singles and doubles rankings at the conclusion of fall action.
Coming in with the highest Blue Devil ranking is junior
Kelly Chen, locking in at No. 10. Chen finished the fall with a 14-5 overall ledger and went 5-4 against ranked opponents. Most recently at the ITA Fall National Championships, Chen defeated three ranked foes en route to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw.
Rookie
Chloe Beck earned Duke's second-highest ranking at No. 25. Beck was previously unranked heading into the start of the fall season and defeated four ranked opponents to compile a 10-3 overall ledger. At the ITA All-American Championships in October, Beck entered the tournament in the qualifying singles draw and worked her way into the main draw by defeating six ranked opponents. She ultimately fell in the semifinals.
Sophomore
Margaryta Bilokin and senior
Meible Chi round out Duke's singles players with Bilokin at No. 67 and Chi at No. 77. Bilokin played to an 8-4 ledger, while Chi went 6-3 overall.
Duke was also represented on the doubles list with Beck and Chi checking in at No. 35. The duo played to a 3-2 ledger this fall, including 1-1 against nationally-ranked foes.
Tuesday also marks the first time we will see freshman
Yasmine Mansouri in action in a Blue Devil jersey as she signed to join the squad for the spring schedule.
Following the match in Phoenix, the Blue Devils will kick off their home slate Wednesday, Jan. 22 against Elon at 3 p.m.
