DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior midfielder
Max Moser came off the bench to spark the Blue Devils to a 3-0 victory over visiting Harvard in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Moser, playing just 14 minutes, provided assists on the first two goals.
For the second straight game, senior
Daniele Proch scored twice, while junior
Matthias Frick had what proved to be the game winner for the Blue Devils. Duke improves to 4-0-0 this year with three of the wins being shutouts. Also for the second consecutive game, Moser came off the bench to provide an assist in victory.
"[
Max Moser] has come in like an ace for us the past two games," said head coach
John Kerr. "He's a little bit banged up so we didn't want to risk him for too long. He knew what he had to do and he did it and we're pleased."
The Blue Devils, in a somewhat lackluster first-half performance, struggled to break down the Harvard (0-2-0) defense as the two teams headed into the locker room scoreless. Duke outshot the Crimson 13-2, but had just three on frame. Time of possession in the opening half was 67 percent for the Blue Devils to Harvard's 33 percent.
"I think we tried complicate [breaking down Harvard's defense] in the first half," Kerr said. "We tried too many longer balls and we tried to eradicate that in the halftime talk by getting closer together and playing shorter balls to break them down. In the second half, we did that better. We still need to improve our efficiency on offense."
With the Crimson still holding off the Blue Devil attack, Moser came off the bench in the 51st minute and had an immediate impact. The right-winger needed just over a minute to earn a corner kick on the right side.
Moser served in the perfect ball to
Aedan Stanley making the near-post run. The sophomore winger flicked it to the back post for Frick to put it in the right side net for his first tally of the year. Just 1:56 later it was Moser again with the magical right foot finding top finisher Proch's right foot just inside the 18-yard box. The Italy native hit a beauty of a one timer to put Duke up 2-0.
Brandon Williamson provided the initial pass to start the play.
The Blue Devils continued to put pressure on the Crimson and Proch came off the bench late in the game to earn Duke's third penalty kick of the year. He stepped up to the spot and buried it for his fifth tally of the year.
Through four games this season, Moser has four assists and Proch has five goals to lead the Blue Devil offense. In goal,
Will Pulisic made one save today to post his third shutout of the year and 15th of his career. Bobby Harraka had five saves in net for the Crimson.
Duke opens ACC play Friday night against No. 7 Virginia in Durham. The Cavaliers, unbeaten and unscored upon this season, and Blue Devils kick off at 6 p.m., on ESPNU. Tickets are available at GoDuke.com/Tickets.
