PORTLAND, Ore. – Boosted by a fifth consecutive round in the 60's from junior
Adrien Pendaries, the Duke men's golf team posted a five-under score as a team and made a move up the leaderboard on Monday in the second round of the Nike Collegiate Invitational.
Pendaries is four shots off the individual lead with 18 holes to play on Tuesday, while the Blue Devils moved from ninth to seventh thanks to their five-under 279 on Monday at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Oklahoma (-31) extended its first-round lead with a 267 and is 15 strokes clear of second-place Wake Forest (-16). Clemson (-14), Oklahoma State (-10), Vanderbilt (-8), Georgia (-6), Duke (-5), Texas (-3), Baylor (-1) and Stanford (E) round out the top 10 in a 15-team field featuring eight ranked programs. The Sooners' Logan McAllister leads on the individual board at 10-under par.
Pendaries backed up Sunday's two-under 69 with a four-under 67 to charge 12 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place at six-under through 36 holes. The junior survived an up-and-down front nine to play the back in a bogey-free five-under par that featured three birdies and an eagle on the par-four 17th.
"The conditions were definitely better today," said Pendaries. "It warmed up quickly, but the greens were still very receptive which allowed us to be aggressive to most pin positions. I am happy with the way I stayed patient today. I just kept my head down (after the front nine) and I knew that there were opportunities for birdies on the back. I was able to play some cleaner golf and hit some special shots to come home in 30. I am looking forward to the challenge tomorrow."
One of just two eagles all day on the 17th, Pendaries took advantage with the tees moved up making the hole drivable at 318 yards. He ripped his drive over the trees on the left, his ball finding the front of the green and releasing to a makeable 15-foot range.
Junior
Evan Katz followed Sunday's 68 with a 69 on Monday and is tied for 10th at five-under 137. Katz birdied five of his final 13 holes in the second round, including a birdie on the par-3 10th – one of just nine yielded by the hole on Monday.
The other three Blue Devils in the lineup each shaved strokes off their Sunday scores as senior
Steven DiLisio signed for a 72, sophomore
Quinn Riley a 73 and senior
Chandler Eaton an even-par 71. DiLisio is tied for 43rd (73-72, +3), with Riley (74-73, +5) and Eaton (76-71, +5) tied for 55th.
