DUBLIN, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Duke men's golf team steps out of the traditional stroke play competition this week for the Jack Nicklaus Collegiate Invitational – a unique four-team, match-play event at the Muirfield Village Golf Club, featuring the Blue Devils, Clemson, Florida State and host Ohio State.
The match play format will pit No. 7 Duke versus Florida State and Ohio State versus No. 15 Clemson on Monday. The morning session being three foursome matches between the teams, with the afternoon session planned as three four-ball matches.
A total of six points are available per team Monday, with Monday's winning teams advancing to the championship bracket on Tuesday and the losing teams playing for third place. Tuesday's format is six singles matches between the teams.
Muirfield Village, designed by Columbus native Jack Nicklaus, has played host to the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament since 1976. The course has also hosted the 1986 U.S. Junior Amateur, the 1987 Ryder Cup Matches and the 1992 U.S. Amateur.
The Blue Devils have seniors
Chandler Eaton and
Steven DiLisio, juniors
Adrien Pendaries,
Evan Katz and
Qi wen Wong and sophomore
Quinn Riley in Columbus for the event, with pairings to be announced.
Pendaries leads the squad with a 3-1 career record in collegiate match play events, winning both in last season's East Lake Cup in Atlanta and splitting matches in the NCAA Championship in 2018. Eaton and Katz are the only other Blue Devils with collegiate match play experience in their careers.
Match play formats began in the NCAA Championship in 2009, and the ACC announced that match play will factor in the ACC Championship beginning this season.
The Blue Devils are fresh off a seventh-place finish at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational last weekend, after opening the fall with a second-place showing at the
Rod Myers Invitational in September.
