Erin Scherrer each recorded a goal and an assist in the 2018 ACC Championship quarterfinal against Syracuse to power the second-seeded Blue Devils past the Orange, 4-1. Duke advanced to the tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season and head coach
Pam Bustin also collected the 275th victory of her head coaching career with the result. The Blue Devils topped the Orange in both meetings last fall to move to 2-5 in the all-time series.
Syracuse is out to a 6-2 start in 2019 and remained at No. 19 in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll after splitting a pair of contests last weekend. The Orange dropped a 2-0 decision to Virginia before defeating Colgate, 3-1.
Charlotte de Vries had two tallies in the win over Colgate and leads all Syracuse players with eight goals on the season. She is second in the ACC and eighth nationally in goals per game (1.13) this week. Syracuse goalkeepers Sarah Sinck and Syd Taylor have combined for a 1.36 goals against average.
The Blue Devil program is 56-111-2 all-time in regular season ACC contests. Duke went 5-1 in conference play last fall.

A tip-in goal by Ashley Kristen in the 84th minute lifted the Blue Devils over No. 13 Stanford Nov. 14, 2015 in a thrilling NCAA first round contest at Virginia's University Hall Turf Field. Kristen's game winner broke a scoreless tie, advancing Duke to a second-round meeting with Virginia. The 2015 Blue Devils continued their NCAA Tournament run to the national semifinals.
Stanford moved up one spot to No. 15 in the national poll following a 2-0 shutout of Cal Sept. 20. The Cardinal plays at Wake Forest Friday night before making the trip to Durham.
Corinne Zanoli's 14 goals and two assists lead all Stanford players. Zanoli is the national leader in goals per game (1.56) and ranks third in the country in points per game (3.33). Goalkeeper Kelsey Bing enters the weekend with a 1.67 goals against average and a .810 save percentage.
Duke owns a record of 20-2-1 historically against teams from the America East Conference and is 5-1 all-time against Stanford. The Blue Devils defeated AEC member Cal, 4-1, earlier this month.

Closing In on a Historic Start
With seven consecutive wins to kick off the year, head coach
Pam Bustin's 2019 squad has secured the second-best start in program history. The 2016 Blue Devils started the fall 8-0 en route to a 16-4 finish. Duke is one of only two remaining unbeaten teams remain in the Division I landscape, joining the team's next ACC opponent, North Carolina.

Shutouts Stacking Up
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Sammi Steele and the defensive unit notched their third shutout of the fall last Sunday against Ohio. Two of the Blue Devils' shutouts have come against ranked opponents, including a 1-0 win over then-No. 2 Maryland at the B1G/ACC Cup. Last year's Duke squad finished with eight shutouts in 22 contests.

National Passion
A number of Blue Devils were in action with USA Field Hockey teams over the summer, highlighted by senior midfielder
Margaux Paolino, who claimed Pan American Games bronze with the U.S. women's national team in Lima, Peru. The squad defeated Chile, 5-1, in the bronze medal game. Paolino was also in action with Team USA this summer in International Hockey Federation (FIH) Pro League play.
In addition to a number of spring USA Field Hockey international tours that featured returning and incoming Blue Devils, Duke also had nine student-athletes selected for June's Young Women's National Championship in Lancaster, Pa. Four Blue Devils advanced with their squads to the tournament's gold medal match. Duke assistant coach
Ralph Boersma serves as an assistant coach with the U.S. U-19 team and last month completed an FIH Level 3 coaching course at the site of the Pan American Games in Lima.

Holding Steady
The Blue Devils remained at No. 2 for a third consecutive week in the national rankings after improving to 7-0 with the victory over the Bobcats. The first NCAA RPI rankings of the season were released this week, with Duke in the No. 2 spot. This weekend's opponents, Syracuse and Stanford, were No. 10 and No. 19, respectively, in the RPI. Duke is one of three ACC programs inside the top five of the latest national poll.
