The Duke Women Place Second at Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational Friday Evening
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Duke women's cross country team earned second place with 51 total points at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course Friday evening.
"Today was a great opportunity to see how the ACC course runs," said head coach Rhonda Riley. "We have a young squad who raced well and got a taste for their first 6k of the season. We will go back to work and continue to get fitter as the season progresses."
Senior Lindsay Billings led the Blue Devils with a fifth place finish, clocking a time of 21:10.2. Sophomore Elizabeth Reneau finished next for Duke, earning a top-10 placement of ninth place (21:51.0), while freshman Samantha Schadler placed 10th with a time of 21:58.9 in her first collegiate race. Rounding out the top five finishers for Duke were junior Leigha Torino in 12th place (22:03.1) and junior Amanda Beach in 15th (22:19.6).
Virginia Tech took first overall with 22 points, while Clemson finished third (69), Miami fourth (137) and American fifth (141). The Blue Devils head back to the Buford Meredith Cross Country Course at Virginia Tech on Saturday, November 1 for the ACC Championships, and the following weekend for the Hokie Open on Saturday, November 8.
The Duke men next race at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m., while the Blue Devil women are scheduled to compete next at the Great American XC Festival in Cary, N.C., on Saturday, October 5 at 7 a.m.
