DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke baseball standout
James Marvel was named the Pittsburgh Pirates' Minor League Pitcher of the Year, announced by the organization earlier this week.
The right-hander enjoyed an impressive season in the minors before making the next step to the majors after his season concluded in Triple A. This season, Marvel posted a 3.10 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 17 starts for the Altoona Curve—the Double-A affiliate of the Pirates, on his way to receiving Mid-Season All-Star honors and also being named Pitcher of the Week for his performances across the third week of April.
After being promoted to Triple-A with the Indianapolis Indians, he closed out the minor-league season with a perfect 7-0 record, 2.67 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP across 11 starts.
Marvel made his major league debut less than two weeks ago in a start against the St. Louis Cardinals at PNC Park, becoming the 44
th Duke baseball alum to reach the big league ranks.
As a Blue Devil, Marvel spent three seasons in Durham. In 2014, he posted 2-2 record along with a 1.78 ERA, allowing five earned runs over 25.1 innings and four starts. As a freshman, the Moraga, Calif., native went 4-2 with a 3.64 ERA across 42.0 innings of work.
