DURHAM, N.C. – Members of the Duke men's tennis team will get their first taste of fall collegiate action for the season when the program hosts its annual Duke James Bonk Invitational this weekend in Cary, N.C. The event kicks off Friday and continues through Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park.
Eight Blue Devils are set to take part in the three-day tournament, named for
Dr. James Bonk, a former Duke chemistry professor and assistant tennis coach who passed away in 2013. The event has been held annually since 2015 in honor of Dr. Bonk's impact on the Duke tennis program.
Senior
Nick Stachowiak and junior
Sean Sculley will lead the group of Blue Devils headed to Cary this weekend. Stachowiak was
earlier this week listed at No. 59 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 2019-20 Oracle ITA Division I preseason rankings.
Also set to represent Duke in Cary is junior
Edu Güell, who will don the Duke Blue and White in a collegiate tournament for the first time after reaching the championship match at a Universal Tennis Rating open event in Raleigh earlier this month.
The Blue Devils' freshman class, tabbed the No. 1 incoming class in the nation according to spring rankings released by TennisRecruiting.net, will also be in action in Cary.
Michael Heller,
Garrett Johns,
Omni Kumar,
Samuel Rubell and
Andrew Zhang will make their Duke debuts in the collegiate format.
All eight Blue Devils entered in the Duke James Bonk Invitational will compete in singles and doubles competition.
