CARY, N.C. – Juniors
Edu Güell and
Sean Sculley and freshman
Andrew Zhang all claimed singles titles to close out an impressive opening weekend of fall action for the Blue Devils at the Duke James Bonk Invitational.
Güell claimed the first title of his collegiate career, pairing a 3-0 weekend in doubles with a 4-0 record in singles. A native of Barcelona, Spain, Güell topped Duke teammate
Garrett Johns in a grueling singles final in the Royal draw, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Sculley collected the second singles title of his Duke career, defeating Virginia Tech's Brandon Perez by scores of 6-1, 6-2, in the White draw.
Zhang added a title for the Blue Devils in the Blue draw, playing to a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5 win over Jake Munns of Furman.
Also winning for Duke Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park was freshman
Samuel Rubell, who defeated William & Mary's George Davis, 6-4, 7-5 in the consolation final of the Royal draw.
"I've been impressed with all our freshmen," said head coach
Ramsey Smith. "All of these matches are opportunities to get matches under their belt and to improve, and they're doing a good job ... This is a brand new team from last year. We focused a lot on the culture. We have five upperclassmen and five freshmen. I spent a lot of time with the returning five developing the exact foundation that we wanted for these freshmen coming in ... So far I'm pleased with where we are, but it's something we need to continue to work on."
Duke hits the road for the next round of fall action, traveling to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships Oct. 5-13.
