DURHAM, N.C. -- Junior
Adrien Pendaries matched his best finish as a Blue Devil and the No. 12 Duke men's golf team finished second at the 10th annual
Rod Myers Invitational that wrapped up Sunday at the Duke Golf Club.
The Blue Devils were edged over the final 18 holes by No. 6 Wake Forest for the team title, while Pendaries' 10-under 206 was good for second place. The Demon Deacons (-22) rallied from six strokes down entering Sunday and won the event for the fourth time in the last five seasons, beating the hosts by three strokes.
Duke shot 19-under for the tournament – its second-lowest in RMI history, followed by Louisville (-6), Penn State (even) and UNC Greensboro (even) to round out the top five of the 13-team field. UNCG's Will Brightwell was the individual medalist at 11-under par.
Pendaries was in the 60s for each of his three rounds, including his bogey-free final round of three-under 69 on Sunday. He led the field in par-4 scoring for the tournament, averaging 3.83 strokes (five-under par) on the par-4 holes.
"Obviously it's disappointing not being able to win as an individual or as a team," said Pendaries. "It's important that I look at all that was good this week, and what needs to be improved. I made great strides with my putting since my last tournament and it showed this week. Still plenty to be improved in my game for the rest of the season, and I look forward to building off of this good start to keep improving throughout the rest of the fall season."
A junior from France, Pendaries' second-place finish matched his best as a collegian after finishing as the runner-up at last season's Clemson Invitational. His 10-under 206 was also the second-best of his career, behind the 16-under last year at Clemson.
