Duke Men's Cross Country Finish Second at the Cavalier Classic
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Blue Devil men's cross country team placed second with 37 points and finished three runners in the top-10 at the 8k Cavalier Classic Saturday morning.
Duke also totaled six runners in the top-15 and finished eight points shy of first-place Virginia. North Carolina finished third with 64 points, followed by Tennessee in fourth (131) and Norfolk State (132).
Junior CJ Ambrosio led the way for Duke, earning second place with a time of 24:27.2. Junior Paul Dellinger finished right behind Ambrosio in third, clocking a time of 24:28.5. Rounding out the top-10 finishers for Duke was junior Alex Miley, who placed seventh overall with a time of 24:36.4.
Freshman Zach Kinne and sophomore Chris Theodore finished back to back in 12th and 13th place, registering times of 24:44.7 and 24:44.8, respectively. Senior Tom Sullivan rounded out the top-15 runners, earning 15th with a time of 24:47.1.
"We ran pretty well and came in strong at the end," said head coach Norm Ogilvie. "Ambrosio and Dellinger went for the win and I am really proud of how they ran. Our five-man average of 24:36.62 is just shy of Virginia's 24:33.62, and we are only a few points back of the No. 23 team in the country. We have been training hard and came in a little tired, but overall we are continuing to improve."
Duke went 3-1 for the day and improved its overall record to 11-1. The Blue Devils also ended the day 1-1 in ACC competition and are now 2-1 in conference play for the year.
The Duke women next compete in the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., Saturday, September 20 at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Devil men next race at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday, September 28 at 11:10 a.m.
