DURHAM, N.C. – The Blue Devils will host their second and final home tournament in Cameron Indoor Stadium this weekend as they welcome American, Georgia and Northwestern for the Blue Devil Classic Friday-Saturday, September 13-14.
Friday features four matches before the tournament concludes with a pair of Saturday contests. Duke (5-2, 0-0 ACC) opens tournament play against American (4-3, 0-0 Patriot League) at 12 p.m., Friday before challenging Northwestern (5-1, 0-0 Big Ten) at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils conclude the Blue Devil Classic against Georgia (3-3, 0-0 SEC) at 3 p.m., Saturday.
ACC Network Extra is set to broadcast all six tournament matches.
Duke made the short trip to Greensboro, N.C., and swept UNCG 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24) to extend its win streak to five matches heading into the Blue Devil Classic. Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by senior
Samantha Amos with eight kills to hit .333 with just three errors followed by freshman
Gracie Johnson with seven and zero attack errors. Libero
Mackenzie Cole and outside hitter
Payton Schwantz paced the defense with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
So far this season, sophomore
Ade Owokoniran leads the team with 79 kills (4.39 k/s) and is hitting .278. On defense, Cole has a team-high 94 digs (3.92 d/s), with Schwantz right behind with 74 (3.08 d/s). Rookie
Camille Nazor has dished out 136 assists (5.67 a/s) on the season with
Sarah Nelson right behind with 114 (5.18 a/s).
American is 4-3 heading to Durham and most recently swept Norfolk State. Senior outside hitter Aleksandra Sochacka was named to the Patriot League's Weekly Honor Roll. Sochacka averaged 3.05 kills-per-set in addition to posting a .282 hitting percentage. Leading AU offensively is junior Helena Elbaek with 4.73 kills-per-set, good enough for the top spot in the Patriot League.
Georgia flew west to California last week to take part in the Mizuno Classic hosted by Long Beach State. Georgia was swept by UCLA to open tournament play Thursday. After dropping the opening set to host LBSU, Georgia rebounded to win the next three and defeat the Beach in four sets. The offense was strong against the Beach as four players topped double-digit kills, led by Kianna Young's career-best 16. Tournament play concluded with a three-set loss to Texas State. Young laid down a team-best 12 kills to secure a spot on the all-tournament team.
Northwestern went 2-1 last weekend with wins against Austin Peay State (3-1) and Texas Tech (3-2) before falling to Stephen F. Austin (3-1). Temi Thomas-Ailara and Ella Grbac were named to the All-Tournament team. First-year Temi Thomas-Ailara was awarded her first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after dishing out four straight aces in the first set of NU's thrilling 3-2 victory over Texas Tech. Thomas-Ailara added three more aces, 19 kills and 5 blocks against the Red Raiders at the Under Armour Challenge. The first-year finished the tournament 55 kills, 11 blocks and 25 digs.
Following this weekend at home, Duke will travel to Hempstead, N.Y., for the Hofstra Invitational to close out tournament play for the season.
