GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team extended its win streak to five Tuesday evening by sweeping UNCG 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 26-24) in Greensboro, N.C.
"It was a great environment to play in," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "It's a great facility and they had their entire band playing behind us. It was a great environment away from home to challenge and test us a bit. It was good to see us be able to handle that and have fun with it. I'm pleased with some of the changes we were able to make during the match and that helped us develop as a team."
Duke hit .205 for the match and limited UNCG to just a .096 clip. Offensively, the Blue Devils were led by senior
Samantha Amos with eight kills to hit .333 with just three errors followed by freshman
Gracie Johnson with seven and zero attack errors. Libero
Mackenzie Cole and outside hitter
Payton Schwantz paced the defense with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
The Spartans led early in the first set thanks to a 5-0 run to force the Blue Devils into a timeout. Schwantz stepped back with a big topspin serve to help spearhead a 6-1 Duke run with help from rookie
Gracie Johnson's back-to-back-to-back kills. After one frame, Duke hit .237 and limited UNCG to a .098 hitting percentage.
Senior
Samantha Amos came out hot in the second set and led the team with five kills to hit .444 percent with just one error and picked up two blocks. Once again, the Spartans weren't able to connect on kills and hit just .079 in the second.
The third and what would become the final set was a back-and-forth affair that was tied at 24 each nearing the end of the set. Freshman
Lizzie Fleming tallied her fifth kill of the evening before setter
Camille Nazor sealed the deal by throwing the Spartan defense off guard with an attack at the net to give Duke its fifth win of the season.
"It's going to be a challenging tournament," Nagel said. "Each of those programs are good and it will be a lot of work. But, it will help us learn more about ourselves and also help us get better as a result of playing strong opponents. The ACC will be a challenge night in and night out so it will only help prepare us for that."
Duke will return to Durham to host its second and final home tournament of the year. The Blue Devils will welcome American, Georgia and Northwestern to Cameron Indoor Stadium September 13-14.
