DURHAM, N.C.—Six members of the Duke men's lacrosse team have been selected to the ACC All-Academic Team as announced by the ACC office Thursday.
Representing the squad for Duke is Sean Lowrie, Joe Robertson, Cade Van Raaphorst, Jake Seau, Reilly Walsh and Peter Welch. This is the second consecutive honor for Lowrie, Robertson and Van Raaphorst, while Seau, Walsh, and Welch garner their first recognition.
Robertson led the squad in scoring this past season with 42 goals and 17 assists for 59 points, while Van Raaphorst anchored the defense with 24 caused turnovers and 63 ground balls. His 63 pickups were the most of any non-faceoff specialist for the Blue Devils and ranked fourth in the ACC in goals per game and points per game.
The midfield trio of Lowrie, Seau and Walsh was a crucial part of Duke's success. They combined for 33 goals and 54 points overall. Seau, a graduate student in the Fuqua School of Business, saved his best year for last, finishing 2019 with a career-best 25 points from 15 goals and 10 assists. The 25 points in 18 outings were 14 more than he had his previous 35 games. Walsh added eight goals and eight assists, while Lowrie had 10 goals and three assists.
Van Raaphorst, a first team All-America choice for the second consecutive season, helped anchor one of the country's fiercest defenses. The senior led all non-faceoff specialists with 63 ground balls and ranked second on the team with 24 caused turnovers as Duke finished the season ranked seventh in scoring defense at 9.61 goals per game.
Welch, a longstick midfielder, also was a key piece to Duke's success on the defensive end in 2019. Instrumental on the faceoff wings as well, Welch collected 33 ground balls and forced 13 turnovers. He also added two goals and an assist from his defensive role.
The Blue Devils went 13-5 overall in 2019, advancing to the NCAA semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Virginia.
