DURHAM, N.C. – A pair of home runs paced the visiting Coastal Carolina (23-6) past the Duke (12-16) on Tuesday, as the Blue Devils dropped an 11-4 decision to the Chanticleers at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Coastal was powered by a grand slam in the third and a three-run shot in the sixth to pick up the midweek victory and improve to 2-0 in the all-time series.
Duke jumped on top early thanks to a sacrifice fly from Kristina Foreman in the first inning with the bases loaded to go up 1-0. However, CCU was able to escape without any further damage, leaving the bases loaded after a line out and pop up.
A leadoff double and a Blue Devil fielding error keyed a two-run second inning from Coastal, as the visitors jumped ahead 2-1 behind an RBI fielder's choice and a bases-loaded walk. After a double play erased a one-out single for Duke in the home half of the inning, the Chanticleers used an HBP, walk and an error to set up a bases-loaded walk to up their lead to 3-1. They then followed with a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch in the next at-bat to push their lead to 7-1.
The Blue Devils pulled two runs back in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth, cutting the lead down to three. After Jameson Kavel singled to right to put two on with one out, Foreman once again stepped the plate and delivered. The freshman recorded her team-leading 18th RBI of the season with a single to left that brought home Deja Davis. Raine Wilson would follow with an infield single that would set up a sac fly from Caroline Jacobsen on a foul out, as Kavel beat the throw home to cut Coastal's lead to 7-3.
Duke's fourth run came from the bat of Jacobsen, as she reeled in her third multi-RBI contest of the season. The third baseman singled up the middle with two on, scoring Davis and whittling CCU's lead down to 7-4. However, Coastal would squash the home team's momentum in the next half inning, scoring four runs on four hits, highlighted by the three-run homer to make it an 11-4 ballgame. From there, CCU only allowed three runners to reach base as they closed out the win.
Abboud and Davis led the way offensively, both recording two hits on the day. Abboud recorded her second-straight multi-hit contest, while Davis has recorded a hit in eight of the last nine contests. Foreman and Jacobsen each drove in two runs, leading the team with six and three multi-RBI performances this season, respectively.
Shelby Walters (4-8) earned the start, going 2.0 innings and striking out two while walking four. Peyton St. George threw 3.0 innings of relief, striking out four, with three of those coming in the top of the fourth. Amelia Wiercioch closed out the final 2.0 innings, fanning three batters.
The Blue Devils will now head to Columbia, S.C., to take on No. 16 South Carolina on Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m. The matchup will be broadcast on SEC Network + and can be accessed via WatchESPN.com or the ESPN app.
