DURHAM, N.C. – With the 2019 season opener two weeks away, head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce right-handed pitcher Billy Seidl as part of the Blue Devils' most recent recruiting class.
“Billy Seidl is a true power arm,” said Pollard. “He pitches like he plays football, with a bulldog mentality. He's a really accomplished player for St. Sebastian's on the football field. On the mound, he's been up to 92-93 miles per hour. He has a wipeout slider, and could potentially project as a closer at the college level and beyond.”
A four-year letterwinner at St. Sebastian's, Seidl comes to Durham from Wellesley, Mass. Seidl enjoyed an impressive junior campaign on the mound, sporting a 7-0 record, which came across seven appearances on his way to earning both Independent School League (ISL) Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher honors. He closed out the 2018 campaign with a 0.58 ERA over 48.1 innings of work, while collecting 63 strikeouts in his efforts.
Seidl is regarded as a top 500 prospect by Perfect Game, and earned Underclass All-American Third Team in 2018. In addition, the organization also lists Pauley as the No. 2 overall prospect and the second-best right-handed pitcher in the state of Massachusetts.
A two-sport athlete, Seidl also competed in football, lettering all four years of his prep career as a quarterback. A scholar-athlete, he is a member of the National Honor Society and has received academic honors with distinction every semester for the past six years at St. Sebastian's. His brother Tommy is currently a member of the Harvard baseball team.
Seidl is part of Duke's 12-member 2019 recruiting class along with LHP Michael Foltz (Myrtle Beach, N.C.), 1B/OF Britt Fuller (Charlotte, N.C.), RHP Marcus Johnson (Fontana, Calif.), INF/RHP Thomas Keehn (Highland, Md.), LHP Clark Klitenic (Bethesda, Md.), C Chad Knight (Westport, Conn.), INF Grant Norris (Somerset, Pa.), INF Graham Pauley (Milton, Ga.), OF Sam Siani (Glendale, Pa.), RHP Colten Smith (Colmar, Pa.) and RHP Henry Williams (Darien, Conn.). GoDuke.com is set to release details on all 12 of the newest Blue Devils in the coming weeks.
