DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University men's soccer team held its annual banquet Tuesday night, handing out the five annual awards as voted by the team.
Senior forward
Daniele Proch highlighted the group, garnering the team's Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player recognition in a vote of the players. Junior
Matthias Frick was voted the Defensive Player of the Year, while
Hassan Pinto was tabbed the Rookie of the Year. The
John Rennie Award, bestowed to the player or players who daily make the team better on and off the field, featured co-winners in Pinto and senior
Max Feldman.
A first team All-ACC pick for the second consecutive season, Proch was the Blue Devils' undisputed leader on the field in 2019. He led the team with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points, making up 41 percent of the team's 29 goals and 33 percent of Duke's 87 points on the year.
Proch, consistently drawing a crowd of defenders, ranks fourth in the league in goals per game and fifth in points per game. He scored multiple goals in three games this season and had a hand in 17 of the 29 scores overall.
He tallied four goals in a pair of wins over Harvard and Princeton to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Week recognition in September and was listed 21st on Top Drawer Soccer's midseason upperclassmen top 100 list.
Frick, a starter in all 18 games, played both center midfield and center back this past season. Eventually settling back into his home on the backline, the junior from Austria helped lead the Blue Devils to six shutouts. He led field players in minutes played with 1,653 and posted a goal and two assists on the year.
Pinto featured one of the best stories for the Blue Devils. A native of Durham, he transferred to Duke with one year of eligibility remaining and sought out the Duke coaching staff for a chance to play with the Blue Devils. After first stepping foot on campus in August, Pinto fell right into the rhythm of the team. In his first game as a Blue Devil, the Jordan High School product came off the bench to score his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 win over Furman. The next day he started at outside back in a 2-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield en route to winning the
John Rennie Nike Invitational Most Valuable Player award. Pinto started the next 16 games and played every minute at right back.
Throughout his four-year career, Feldman was a constant for the Blue Devils. The Chapel Hill native provided a positive energy to the team that was second to none. His work ethic on the field was matched by his effort in the classroom and community. He was a participant in the ACE program, traveling to South Africa to volunteer with children and was a key component in helping the Duke men's soccer team earn an ACC Top Six for Service Award last year. This past summer he completed an internship with Nike in Portland.
