DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach
Ramsey Smith and the Duke men's tennis program are pleased to announce the addition of
Luca Keist to the Blue Devil roster. A transfer student from Charlotte, Keist will enroll at Duke in January 2020.
"We are thrilled to welcome Luca into our Duke Tennis Family this January," Smith said. "Luca brings so many different things to the table and he will impact our program immediately on and off the court."
A two-year letter winner at Charlotte, Keist joins the Blue Devils after taking a hiatus from collegiate tennis and playing various tournaments. Prior to stepping away, Keist ranked No. 62 in the preseason ITA Singles poll. The Rothrist, Switzerland, native had a strong showing this fall at the Cancun $15K Futures professionals event, winning five matches (three in qualifying and then two in the main draw.)
During his sophomore season, Keist earned first team All-Conference USA accolades in singles and doubles action during the 2018-19 campaign. Along with Charlotte teammate Constandinos Christoforou, Keist climbed as high as No. 18 in the ITA doubles rankings last year. The duo was named an alternate for the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championships after compiling a 15-9 ledger. Keist also went 18-14 in singles for the season while playing at the No. 1 position for the 49ers and was listed No. 109 in the final ITA singles rankings.
"Luca is an established nationally-ranked collegiate player in singles and doubles and he brings leadership and a wealth of experience competing at the top of the line-up," Smith continued. "This is a huge addition for our program and big step forward towards our program vision and goals."
Keist also garnered Conference USA All-Academic recognition for his sophomore year.
During his first season at Charlotte, Keist won 18 singles matches at the No. 1 spot en route to being named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year. He was tabbed 15th in the final ITA Carolina Region singles rankings and 117th in the final national singles poll, making him the highest ranked player in Conference USA that year. Keist was also a first team All-Conference USA selection in singles and a second team pick in doubles.
Prior to arriving at Charlotte, Keist reached a career high of No. 176 in the International Tennis Federation's juniors rankings.
