DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke University men's lacrosse team will open the 2020 campaign ranked sixth according to the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook released Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Blue Devils finished last season tied for third in the national polls after advancing to the NCAA semifinals.
Reigning NCAA Champion Virginia comes in at No. 1, while semifinalists Penn State and Yale are second and third, respectively. Maryland and Penn round out the top five. All five of the ACC programs are ranked in the top 11. Duke is slated to face nine of Inside Lacrosse's preseason top 20, including five of the top 10.
Under the guidance of 14th-year head coach
John Danowski, the Blue Devils return four of their top five scorers from a year ago and a strong corps from last year's defensive unit. In addition, Duke features 13 talented newcomers to the program, including fifth-year graduate transfer
Austin Meacham from Dartmouth.
Senior Trio Selected as Captains
The trio of
JT Giles-Harris,
Terry Lindsay and
Joey Manown will serve as captains for the 2020 Blue Devils. All three have been standouts in their positions throughout their careers. Giles-Harris is considered the league's top close defenseman, while Lindsay is a crucial piece to Duke's defensive success as a defensive middie. Manown, a tough attackman, looks to have his last year be his best.

Eight current Duke freshmen were ranked among the top 100 in Inside Lacrosse's rookie rankings. Close defenseman
Kenny Brower tops the list at No. 2, while attackman
Dyson Williams is third.
Jake Caputo, joining his brother
Owen Caputo, is seventh.
Will Frisoli comes in at No. 14 and
Connor Drake,
Tyler Carpenter and
Cameron Henry are 37th, 49th, and 50th, respectively.
Michael Swirbalus is 83rd.
Caputo Vying for Team USA Spot
Jake Caputo recently was one of 26 players selected to the U.S. Training Roster for the upcoming U19 FIL Championships in 2020. The roster, featuring Caputo and three future Blue Devils, eventually will be trimmed to 23 players. The U19 squad is slated to play again in the Spring Premiere the first weekend in January.
Offensive Power Returns
Duke returns 73 percent of its scoring from a year ago, including top scorer
Joe Robertson. The junior attackman had 59 points from 42 goals and 17 assists in 2019. Classmate
Nakeie Montgomery will be looked to lead the midfield unit after amassing 39 points in his second season.
Joey Manown, owning 100 career points, will join Robertson on attack. Robertson and Manown are aiming to become the 19th and 20th Blue Devils to score 100 career goals.
Giles-Harris, Uppgren to Anchor Defense
The 2019 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-American, Giles-Harris will anchor the close defense along with fifth-year senior
Turner Uppgren in goal. Meacham, following a solid career at Dartmouth, looks to fill one of the holes left by
Jack Fowler and first-team All-American
Cade Van Raaphorst. Lindsay will lead a defensive midfield crew that will have new faces after the graduation of
John Prendergast and
Jack Falk.
2020 Schedule Nearly Finished
The 2020 schedule is in the final stages of being finalized with television outlets. Duke will make its 2020 debut at home, Feb. 1 against Air Force. The Blue Devils will host Syracuse and North Carolina in home ACC contests as well.
