DURHAM, N.C. – Duke rowing head coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno has announced that the trio
Lelia Boley,
Grace Garverick and
Amelia Shunk will serve as the team's captains for the 2019-20 season.
"We are very excited to announce the captains for the 2019-20 season," said Cooke Carcagno. "Lelia, Grace and Amelia not only represent our large and diverse team, but are incredible ambassadors for the sport and epitomize the hard work it will take to hit our goals. These three love to compete and will push their team hard. We are in good hands with Amelia, Grace and Lelia."
Boley, a senior, has been a key member of Duke's varsity 8+ boat throughout her time in Durham. She helped guide the team to silver medal at the ACC Championships a season ago, and was apart of the ACC Crew of the Week on March 28, 2019, for her efforts at the Cooper Sprints.
"Over the past three years, this team and its members have played such a huge role in helping me shape who I am," said Boley. "This leadership position is so thrilling, because, similarly, I get to help shape the team. To have teammates that trust in me to lead us to new heights is truly an honor, and I'm so motivated to give this team whatever it needs to both go fast and love doing it."
Garverick, also a senior, split time between Duke's 3V8 and 4V8 last season, helping them to multiple top-five finishes. The Sacramento, Calif., native sat six seat in the 3V8 boat at the ACC Championship, claiming silver with a time of 6:53.512 to help Duke capture second place overall.
"I am extremely humbled to be a team captain this year," said Garverick. "It means a lot to me that my teammates and coaches see how hard I work and trust in me to lead. I could not be more excited with the direction our team is headed in, but culture wise and results wise. This is going to be a great year for us."
Shunk, who serves as the lone sophomore of the captain trio, looks to build off her impressive freshman campaign after being named the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year. The Corte Madera, Calif., native helped the Blue Devils' V4 boat capture gold at the ACC Championship, marking Duke's first ever gold medal at the ACC Championship. She followed up her impressive performance at the conference championship with another great outing at the NCAA Championships, earning fifth in the Petite Final, marking the highest finish for any boat in program history at the NCAA Championships.
"I am both honored and thrilled to be named one of the captains for our team this year," said Shunk. "My teammates work tirelessly every single day to be te best person, teammate and athlete they can be, and it is an honor to represent them. I have so much faith in my team and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish."
The Blue Devils concluded their fall slate last weekend at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va., where the team captured five top-five finishes.
