DURHAM, N.C.—One current and three future Blue Devils are among the 26 players selected by 2020 U.S. Men's Lacrosse U19 head coach Nick Myers to the trimmed down training roster. Freshman
Jake Caputo and high school seniors
Cole Krauss, Jake Naso and
Brennan O'Neill all were picked to continue to vie for roster spots.
Yale has five representatives to lead the way, while Duke and Ohio State have four apiece. Three of the seven high school seniors are future Blue Devils. Eighteen of the nineteen others are freshmen in college.
The quartet recently traveled to Columbus, Ohio for a training session and a pair of games against high school powers Culver Academy and Hill Academy. Culver edged Team USA Saturday before the U.S. squad bounced back Sunday to beat Hill 14-6.
"We accomplished a great deal last weekend, both on and off the field," Myers said. "I was thrilled that we stayed healthy and got a great evaluation of our group. This team got better and developed a stronger appreciation for each other and the mission."
Naso and O'Neill both hail from St. Anthony's in Long Island. They combined forces to lead the program to the CHSAA State Championship in 2019, with O'Neill putting together a memorable seven-goal effort for the 14-13 win. Naso won nearly 80 percent of his draws at the X last season and is regarded as the top faceoff specialist in his year.
Caputo was an Under Armour All-America as a senior last season and was a standout midfielder for Middle Creek High School in Apex, N.C. He posted 71 points and 62 ground balls his senior year. A product of Delbarton, Krauss is one of the top defensemen in next year's batch of rookies.
A total of 104 players have participated in the tryout process, which began this past June. The final training weekend for the U.S. team before the players begin their college and high school spring lacrosse seasons will come in January. The roster will eventually be pared to 23, the maximum number allowed for international competition under World Lacrosse rules.
The U.S. has won all eight previous World Lacrosse men's U19 championships dating to 1988. Current Duke senior
Terry Lindsay was a member of the squad for the most recent championship in 2016, helping the U.S. to a dramatic 13-12 come-from-behind victory over rival Canada.
The U.S. team will have additional training weekends in January and June before next summer's world championship. Myers and his staff will eventually have to narrow the final roster to the World Lacrosse mandated maximum roster size of 23 players.
