DURHAM, N.C.—The Duke men's lacrosse team has been well represented on the international stage donning the Red, White and Blue of U.S. Lacrosse over the years. A trio of Blue Devils will look to continue that tradition as they head to Columbus, Ohio to take part in a training weekend with the U19 team as it looks to finalize its roster for the upcoming U19 FIL World Championships in July.
Current Blue Devils
Connor Drake and
Jake Caputo will be joined by high school senior and recent signees
Jake Naso and
Brennan O'Neill for the weekend. Team USA will take on high school powers, Culver Academy (Ind.) and The Hill Academy (Canada), Saturday and Sunday.
The 32-player Team USA roster will battle Culver Academy, Saturday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m., and Hill Academy the following morning at 10 a.m. Both games will be played inside Ohio Stadium on Ohio State's campus and admission is free of charge.
All three Duke players advanced through the tryout process as head coach Nick Myers cut the squad from 50 players to 32. He eventually will have to trim the roster to 23 players.
Midfielders, Drake and Caputo shined in the three-day tryout weekend in July with Caputo scoring twice to ice a victory for the Blue team. Prior to stepping on campus in August, the duo showed well in the Under Armour All-America game. Caputo led the South squad with five points, while Drake had a goal and an assist in victory for the North side.
O'Neill, a standout for St. Anthony's, is one of seven high school players among the 32-person roster. He is widely considered the nation's top player in the 2020 senior class and was selected as the Warrior/US Lacrosse High School Boys' National Player of the Year. As a junior he led St. Anthony's to the CHSAA (Long Island/state) championship title with a seven-goal effort for a 14-13 win over rival Chaminade.
One of the top faceoff specialists in the nation, Naso recently inked his commitment to the Blue Devils. He has joined with O'Neill in making St. Anthony's one of the top programs. He won nearly 80 percent of his draws last season and is considered by Newsday as the top faceoff man in his class. Inside Lacrosse rates Naso as the country's No. 14 overall recruit in 2020 and a five-star product out of Long Island.
The U.S. has won all eight previous World Lacrosse men's U19 championships dating to 1988. Current Duke senior
Terry Lindsay was a member of the squad for the most recent championship in 2016, helping the U.S. to a dramatic 13-12 come-from-behind victory over rival Canada.
The U.S. team will have additional training weekends in January and June before next summer's world championship. Myers and his staff will eventually have to narrow the final roster to the World Lacrosse mandated maximum roster size of 23 players.
