CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Duke men's cross country team earned its best finish as a team since 2015 Friday morning at the 2019 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships, placing sixth overall.
The Blue Devils tallied 198 points behind Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, Furman and Charlotte. Duke registered personal-best performances from five of the seven runners.
"I'm very proud of the Southeast Region performance by
CJ Ambrosio today," head coach
Norm Ogilvie said. "He beat some terrific runners and concludes a really strong season for him.
Josh Romine has really come on the last few weeks. Josh wasn't in our top seven back in mid-October but today he finished second. A really strong finish for Josh for the season."
Leading the way for Duke was junior Ambrosio who tallied his fourth first-place finish for the Blue Devils this season. Ambrosio crossed the finish line in a personal-best 30:41.9 to take 24th and garnered All-Region honors in the process.
Ambrosio earns the first All-Region honor since 2015.
Junior Romine was right on Ambrosio's heels in a personal-best 30:56.6 to take 36th, followed by classmate
Alex Miley in 40th (31:04.3).
ACC Freshman of the Year
Sam Rivera clocked in at 31:12.0 in his first collegiate 10k to place 47th overall. Behind a personal-best performance, junior
Paul Dellinger crossed the finish line in 31:15.6 to take 51st while rookie
Zach Kinne completed his first collegiate 10k in 31:28.9 to place 59th.
Rounding out Duke's runners was senior
Tom Sullivan in 113th in 32:36.0.
Duke improved by seven spots from last year's 13th-place finish in the team results and concludes the season 99-35 overall and 17-13 in the ACC.
Today's race marks the conclusion of the season for the Duke men's cross country team.
Indoor track & field will resume Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Carolina Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C.
