DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's track & field team is proud to announce the 2020-21 recruiting class, receiving commitments from three student-athletes on National Signing Day.
MOOREA MITCHELL
As a hammer and shot put specialist, Moorea Mitchell comes to Durham from Sunnyvale, Calif., and goes to Castilleja School in Palo Alto, Calif. While her focus is now solely on track & field, Mitchell was also a standout soccer player where she was the goalkeeper for 13 years. In soccer, Mitchell was on the club MVLA ECNL team and helped guide the team to nationals two years. Mitchell shifted her focus to throwing at the start of her junior year (2018) and threw a PR of 155'11" to take first place at New Balance Nationals Outdoor (Emerging Elite) that following summer (2019). She was named an All-American after placing fifth at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championship meet over the summer with a throw in the hammer of 154' 2.5". She also qualified with a throw of 41' 5.5" for the California State Championships in the shot put and placed in the top 20 of high school shot putters in the state of California.
"I'm excited to welcome Moorea to the Blue Devil track and field team," associate head coach
B.J. Linnenbrink commented. "Through the recruiting process, it became clear Moorea embodied the balance of student and athlete we strive for at Duke. Moorea has thrown the shot put and discus for many years but only recently committed to learn the hammer, becoming proficient in a short time period. With her multisport background and ability to learn quickly, I believe Moorea will become an outstanding collegiate student-athlete."
BRIANNA SMITH
Brianna Smith comes to Duke from Elkins Park, Pa., and went to Cheltenham High School. She is a highly successful athlete on the track as a 15-time state medalist, a seven-time AAU national champion and collected second team All-State honors in the indoor high jump in 2019. She is also No. 2 all-time in the state of Pennsylvania for the heptathlon and pentathlon. As a heptathlete, she placed second in the 2019 New Balance Outdoor Nationals with a PR score of 4,811 points. In the high jump, her PR is 5' 8" while a time of 14.42 is her best in the 100m hurdles.
"We are excited to welcome Brianna into our combined events group," associate head coach
Shawn Wilbourn said. "She is extremely talented in a variety of disciplines and capable of scoring points at the ACC and NCAA level in more than one event. Brianna is also very accomplished in the classroom and she will fit in well with the student-athlete culture here at Duke."
CHARLOTTE TOMKINSON
Charlotte Tomkinson joins the Blue Devil family from Menlo High School in San Carlos, Calif. Tomkinson clocked in a personal-best 2:09.41 in the 800m to place second at the California State Championships and won her second of the Woodbridge Classic with a time of 17:25.20 in the three mile to help her team secure first place.
"What stood out to me most when recruiting Charlotte was her drive to compete," head women's cross country coach
Rhonda Riley said. "She has a fierce competitive spirit that is very apparent when she gets on the line to race. She puts her team first and is the type of athlete who every coach would love to have be in their program. We are looking forward to bringing out Charlottes talent and adding her to the Duke squad."
