DURHAM, N.C. – For the 25
th time in program history, the Duke women's soccer team will be a part of the postseason, as the Blue Devils received a berth in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Duke will host Utah on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. ET at Koskinen Stadium.
"It's great that we got a home match," said head coach
Robbie Church. "I congratulated the team on the regular season, I thought they did a great job. I thought our staff did a great job, but it's the best time of the year. It's time for the NCAA Tournament to begin our road to the national championship. We're looking forward to playing on Friday night."
Duke heads into Friday with an 8-3-7 overall record and 3-1-6 mark across Atlantic Coast Conference Play. With the selection, the Blue Devils have now made the NCAA Tournament for the 16
th time in the last 17 seasons and will host at least a first-round matchup for the fifth-straight year.
Utah will be making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2016, entering the postseason with an 8-8-4 record, including a 3-5-3 mark in the Pac-12. Friday's matchup be just the second in history between the Blue Devils and Utes, with Duke holding the 1-0-0 advantage in the series. Duke welcomed Utah to Durham in 2017, claiming a close 1-0 victory in the lone game of the series.
"I know Rich Manning very well," Church added. "He's done a great Job at Utah. They play in the Pac-12, which is one of the toughest conferences in the country, so they are used to playing very good teams. They're well-coached, and a very skillful team that plays out of pressure, but I think we're really prepared for this."
Friday's winner will move on to the second round to face the winner of Milwaukee (17-1-1) and Wisconsin (14-3-2), who will meet Friday in Madison, Wisc. Florida State (15-5-0) is the region's No. 1 seed, with UCLA (14-4-1), Wisconsin and Washington (11-6-2) taking the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively.
The second and third rounds are set to be held in both Los Angeles, Calif., and Tallahassee, Fla., unless either team loses.
Duke will enter the 2019 tournament led by three All-ACC selections, headlined by All-ACC Second Team honorees
Ella Stevens and
Delaney Graham. Stevens has been an offensive catalyst for Duke this season, earning All-ACC honors for the fourth consecutive season. This season, the senior leads the team in points with 22, while tying for the team lead in goals scored with eight. Her 82 career points place her sixth all-time in Duke history, while she ranks amongst the top five in program history in career goals scored (24) and career assists (34).
Graham has anchored the defensive line for the Blue Devils this season, helping the team eight shutouts on the campaign—including four against top 15 opponents. The Atlanta, Ga., native has recorded four assists on the season, which ties for third on the squad. The Blue Devil sophomore registered a career-high two assists in the matchup against Syracuse on Oct. 27, helping Duke to four goals against the Orange.
