DURHAM, NC- The Duke softball team kicked off the fall season with two wins over East Carolina, 8-0, and UNC-Wilmington, 7-5, on Saturday in Wilmington, N.C.
"We are on a mission to elevate all areas of our game and these two games reinforced the work we are putting in is moving this program in the right direction," Duke head coach
Marissa Young said. "We swung it well, our pitchers threw well, and our defense made the plays behind them. It's about the process this time of year, but we are definitely pleased with what are seeing this early. This is going to be a fun team to watch compete!"
Game 1: East Carolina
The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick start against the Pirates putting five runs on the board in the top of the first inning.
Gisele Tapia and
Deja Davis sparked Duke's offensive rally with singles before
Raine Wilson drove in a run, followed by
Rachel Abboud's single scoring two. Jazz Moreno would push across the last run of the inning with a stand-up double giving Duke a 5-0 lead.
The Blue Devil's offense would extend the lead taking on additional runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings for good measure. Abboud tallied two singles, two doubles and four RBIs. Wilson contributed to the winning effort with three singles and an RBI. Moreno also stood out with a double, single and two RBI.
The Duke defense and pitching staff shut out the East Carolina offense, racking up 11 strikeouts in the 8-0 win.
Peyton St. George shined in the circle with eight strikeouts through four scoreless innings, while
Brianna Butler took over in the fifth to record three strikeouts of her own.
Game 2: UNC-Wilmington
Duke showed fight and resilience in the second game of the day with a 7-5 win over host Wilmington. The offensive production was a collective effort, with six different Blue Devils recording an RBI. While Wilmington, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Blue Devils punched back in the third to take a 2-1 lead with an RBI double from
Shelby Walters and an RBI single from Davis.
In the top of the fourth, Duke took the lead for good as
Felise Collins drove in Abboud, who lead off the inning with a double. The Blue Devils added two more in the fifth inning by the way of Moreno and Tapia to go up 5-2.
Wilmington tried to rally back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two to pull within one run before Butler ended the inning getting the batter looking.
Jameson Kavel led off the top of the 7
th inning with a single followed by 2 RBI hit from
Sydney Bolan. The two Blue Devil runs added in the seventh proved to be of use with Wilmington adding one in the bottom of the inning during a late push.
Walters lead in the circle for the Blue Devils striking out six in four innings of work. Kavel took the mound to close out the 7
th inning, striking out 2 of the 3 batters she faced.

Duke continues fall play as it travels to Knoxville, Tenn. on Sunday, Oct. 13 to take on Tennessee at 1 p.m. Following that contest, Duke hosts two games on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. versus North Carolina Central and Charlotte, respectively.
