DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke baseball team had its first full team practice of the fall Tuesday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field in preparation for the 2019 fall season.
The day began with head coach
Chris Pollard meeting with the media around noon to discuss the upcoming fall schedule and answer questions surrounding the 2019-20 Duke baseball squad. Practice followed at 3:15 p.m. with the Blue Devils focusing on fundamentals for roughly two hours before concluding the team's first official day together.
"It's our first official day of fall practice after about a six-week individual period where we've been brining guys up to the field in small groups," said Pollard. "This will be the second year in a row that we've started our fall later than probably most of our triangle counterparts. We've got a lot of expectations with this club based on things I've seen in our small group work. The really neat thing right now is even though we have a lot of freshmen that are pushing upperclassmen like crazy."
Tuesday's session marks the first of the 40-day fall training window for baseball, which includes two exhibitions against outside competition. The Blue Devils are set to face in-town foe N.C. Central, Saturday, Oct. 19, as its first exhibition matchup before traveling to Fayetteville, N.C., on Saturday, Nov. 2, to take on Coastal Carolina.
Duke will conclude its fall season with the annual Fall World Series, which is scheduled for Nov. 14-16. The team is set for a trio of nine-inning games, which will take place at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
All practices and scrimmages are open to the public across the Blue Devils' fall slate.
After four Blue Devils began their professional careers and six graduated this past spring, Duke returns seven starting position players, including consensus Freshman All-American
Ethan Murray and standout pitcher
Bryce Jarvis.
Twelve players have joined the Blue Devil rankings for this upcoming season, including 11 freshmen and one transfer in
Luke Hartman from Bucknell.
