DURHAM, N.C. – Saturday's Duke-Pittsburgh football game will come exactly 90 years after the two schools played the first contest in Duke Stadium.
On October 5, 1929, the Panthers defeated the Blue Devils, 52-7, as Duke opened the facility on the institution's West campus.
Duke Stadium was renamed Wallace Wade Stadium in 1967 in honor of Hall of Fame coach Wallace Wade, who guided the Blue Devil gridiron program from 1931-41 and 1946-50. In his 16 seasons with the Blue Devils, Wade compiled an overall record of 110-36-7 (.742) while guiding Duke to six Southern Conference championships and Rose Bowl berths in 1938 and 1941.
In 2015, Duke University dedicated Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Duke alumnus Steve Brooks and his wife, Eileen, committed $13 million to the Duke Athletics Department and the Duke Board of Trustees approved the recommendation that the football field be renamed in their honor.
This week's Duke-Pitt game is set for 8 p.m., with broadcast coverage from the new ACC Network.
Tickets are available by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at (919) 681-BLUE or online at
