DURHAM, N.C. – After an impressive win over Syracuse on Senior Day, the ninth-ranked Duke women's soccer team is set to hit the road to Tallahassee to face fifth-ranked Florida State on Thursday, Oct. 31, in the 2019 regular season finale.
The top 10 showdown between the Blue Devils and Seminoles is set for an 8 p.m. kickoff at the Seminole Soccer Complex, with action airing live on the ACC Network, marking Duke's sixth game on national television.
Recapping Last Week
Duke earned a total of four points in the ACC standings last week, drawing with Notre Dame before defeating Syracuse to close out the weekend in the final regular season game at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils battled to a 1-1 draw Thursday evening with the Fighting Irish, resulting in their seventh tie of the season. Senior
Ella Stevens recorded her eighth goal of the season to put Duke on the board, before Notre Dame scored the equalizer with less than five minutes left in regulation to force Duke's eighth overtime match of the campaign.
Duke defeated Syracuse, 4-1, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils used three second-half goals to cruise to their third victory across conference play, including scores from
Caitlin Cosme,
Tess Boade, and
Julia Hannon.
Duke vs. Florida State
Thursday's matchup between Duke and Florida State marks te 30th all-time matchup between the two ACC foes. Florida Sate holds the all-time series advantage over Duke, 13-10-6, including a 11-3 record across games in Tallahassee. Most recently, the two teams met a season ago in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, as Florida State captured a narrow 1-0 victory to advance to the semifinals. The Blue Devils and Seminoles are deadlocked across the last five matchups with a 2-2-1 record, with the three most recent matches taking place in Durham.
Unbeaten Streak Going Strong
Duke holds a 14-game unbeaten streak, which serves as the second-longest in the ACC. The Blue Devils have not been beaten since the second game of the season, where they fell to then-No. 2 North Carolina on the road in a non-conference matchup in the final game of the 2019 Carolina Nike Classic. Duke's 14-game mark trails only top-ranked Virginia in the conference, who holds a 17-game unbeaten streak. Other schools in the ACC who hold multiple-game unbeaten streaks include North Carolina (nine games) and NC State (two games).
Third Time's a Charm
Duke has the potential to close out the ACC regular season slate unbeaten for just the third time in school history, and second time under current head coach
Robbie Church. The Blue Devils were unbeaten across conference play in 1994, posting a 5-0-1 record across ACC play, before going a perfect 10-0-0 in the ACC in 2017 to capture the ACC regular season championship. Duke enters Thursday's regular-season finale with a 3-0-6 record in league play.
Drawing NCAA & School Records
The Blue Devils have earned double-overtime draws in five of their last seven matchups, pushing their draw total to seven on the season to tie the school record. Duke battled to a scoreless draw with then-No. 13 Georgetown in its home opener before recording a 1-1 tie in the ACC opener against NC State in double overtime. Prior to the team's matchup with Clemson, the Blue Devils battled to three consecutive draws against top-ranked Virginia and then-No. 23 Virginia Tech on the road, before reaching a scorless draw against third-ranked North Carolina. Duke battled to back-to-back draws against both Louisville and Notre Dame before defeating Syracuse in its most recent matchup. The Blue Devils are also one scoreless draw away from tying the NCAA record for most scoreless draws in a season.
Duke in the Polls
Duke checked in at No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week as one of five ACC teams in the top 15, and one of six schools ranked in the top 25. Additionally, the Blue Devils are ranked ninth in the Soccer America Top 25, and 11th in the
TopDrawerSoccer rankings. Duke is ranked for the 56th straight week in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, dating back to the ninth week of the 2015 season, when the Blue Devils were ranked No. 22.
