DURHAM, N.C. – Duke junior wrestler Matt Finesilver is set to compete at the U23 Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, beginning Thursday.
Finesilver, who earned an Olympic redshirt earlier this season, garnered a spot on the U23 USA Greco-Roman World Team after cruising through his 87 kg bracket at the National Championships.
During that tournament he upended No. 5 seed Timothy Eubanks in his opening bout before taking down fourth-seeded Jimmy Stillerman in the quarterfinals. His hot streak continued in the semifinal match where he bested the bracket's top seed, Bear Hughes. Finesilver fell behind early, but 12-straight points for him gave the Greenwood Village, Colo., native the 12-5 victory and a spot in the title match where he defeated Blake Smith out of the Olympic training center in Colorado and Arizona in two out of three, including winning the first by tech fall.
Finesilver has had a strong spring wrestling freestyle as well, where he earned a berth at the Senior WTT's after his fourth-place showing at the US Open.
In two years of competition at Duke, Matt has racked up a 51-20 record and was a 2019 ACC runner-up at 174 pounds.
The U23 Senior World Championships will begin Thursday with the finals for the Greco-Roman division being held on Sunday.
