DURHAM, N.C. – Program-highs in runs, hits and strikeouts pushed the Duke softball team past Campbell, 14-9, Friday night in Buies Creek, N.C.
"There were a lot of great contributions up and down the lineup tonight," head coach
Marissa Young said. "The energy was great from the team for all nine innings. I'm very proud of how they played and looking for them to repeat that tomorrow."
Duke enjoyed a night of records at Campbell, setting program records in hits (19) and runs (14) while
Peyton St. George set a program record for strikeouts in a game with 15.
Duke jumped out in control of Campbell early in the game, scoring one in the top of the first. Once the Blue Devils snatched the lead, they never relinquished control.
St. George made another stellar performance in the circle for the Blue Devils. During her first five innings in the circle, she recorded a strikeout for every out, tallying 15 K's, a Duke softball record. The Mechanicsville, Va., native has been the go-to for the Blue Devils pitching staff during fall play.
Eleven of Duke's 14 runs came in the fourth and fifth inning of the contest. In the fourth inning, Duke put five on the board behind doubles from
Gisele Tapia and
Jameson Kavel and a home run from
Rachel Abboud. Four singles and a triple highlighted the six-run fifth inning. Abboud,
Kristina Foreman,
Kamryn Jackson and
Dominique Salinas all recorded singles while Kavel smacked a triple. In Foreman's first game back from injury, she made an impact and went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Campbell made a push in the late innings of the nine-inning game as it scored two in the fifth, sixth and seventh before tacking on three more in the eighth to pull the game within five. Duke kept its lead firm and produced a scoreless ninth to seal the victory.
Duke returns to action Saturday in the Bull City for a 2 p.m. matchup with Winthrop in the Duke Softball Stadium. Tomorrow's meeting will be the first time the two teams have met on the diamond.
