DURHAM, N.C.—High Point sophomore Alex Abril scored in the 66th minute and the Panthers held off a late push from Duke to earn a 1-0 victory in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils held a 14-5 advantage in shots for the game.
With the game scoreless, but Duke (6-6-2) dominating the action, High Point (10-5-0) scored the lone goal of the night against the run of play 20 minutes into the second half. Abril and senior Jonathan Bolanos broke out for the Panthers as the veteran found Abril on the left side of the penalty area. After a few touches, Abril took the half chance and snuck his low driven shot past Duke goalkeeper for what proved to be the winner.
The Blue Devils had the better chances overall in the game, but were just off the mark all night in the final third. Duke attacked well from the flanks, but quality play off his line from High Point goalie Keegan Meyer allowed the Panthers to pick up their seventh shutout of the season.
Duke seniors
Daniele Proch and
Colby Agu both had quality looks at the net, sending them high and wide over the course of the 90 minutes. Proch finished the night with six shots and Agu had two. Meyer registered two saves for High Point.
The possession and run of play was fully in Duke's favor in the first half as the Blue Devils calmly moved the ball around the field. Agu had the best look of the opening 45 minutes, but his attempt skipped just wide left of the frame. Meyer also had a nice save on a shot from Agu.
The second half was very similar in that the Blue Devils continued to find their way into the offensive third and just couldn't quite connect on that final ball. High Point's defense was excellent in the air and on set pieces, holding Duke scoreless on 10 corner kicks on the night.
Duke attacked without abandon in the final 20 minutes, but a steely High Point defense stood strong to post its second consecutive 1-0 win over the Blue Devils.
Pulisic finished with one save on the night and Duke sacrificed only one corner kick. Possession time was 53 percent to 47 percent for the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils make their final regular season road trip of the year Friday to take on ACC foe Pittsburgh. Kickoff at Pitt is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra. Duke returns home for its final two games of the regular season next week.
