BOSTON, Mass. – The 2019-20 rowing season began on a high note, as the Duke club 4+ boat took first place out of 56 teams at the 55th Head of the Charles on the Charles River Saturday afternoon.
"The boat had a very solid race," said assistant coach Kendall Schmidt. "They went out and executed exactly what we planned and it got us where we wanted to be in placement. It's an exciting result to kick off our season and it's a well-earned victory."
The Blue Devils clocked a time of 18:37.474, just under eight seconds faster than second-place Tennessee.
Five freshmen competed for Duke in their first collegiate race, including Ginger Del Real, Alice Elworthy, Emilie Lijesen, Lauren Sizemore and Caeley Tierney.
Duke is back in action Sunday, November 17 at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. Start time is to be determined.
