LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a tightly played contest, the ninth-ranked Duke Blue Devils (7-1-6, 2-0-5 ACC) battled to a 1-1 draw against the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals (11-1-2, 4-1-2 ACC) on the road Friday evening at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Duke jumped out to an early lead, scoring the team's second-quickest goal of the season, to cruise to a 1-0 lead at the half. Louisville answered back with a goal of its own in the 53
rd minute of action to even the contest at one apiece.
From there it was a defensive battle, as neither team conceded a goal en route to the sixth tie of the season for the Blue Devils, and seventh overtime matchup of the campaign. With the draw, Duke extends its unbeaten streak to 12 games, while remaining unbeaten against the Cardinals (2-0-5).
The Blue Devils got out to a fast start for the second contest in a row, using an early goal to grab the advantage. Sophomore
Mackenzie Pluck worked the left side of the final third before Louisville committed a handball violation in the box to secure Duke's first penalty kick of the season at the 10:15 mark. The Blue Devils turned to senior
Ella Stevens, who cashed in the first PK of her career and seventh goal of the season.
The score would hold for the remainder of the first period as Duke headed into the halftime break with a one-goal lead. Louisville held the advantage in shots, 7-2, while both of the Blue Devils' first-half shots were on target.
The Cardinals were aggressive out of the gates in the second half, breaking through for the equalizer in the 53
rd minute. Brooklynn Rivers struck from the left side of the box, sending a ball to the back of the net to even the score at 1-1, with 37 minutes left in regulation.
Defense took over for the remainder of the second period, as the two teams went scoreless to close out regulation and force overtime.
Both teams created opportunities across the two overtime periods, but neither could scratch across a goal as the contest ended in a tie. With the result, five of the seven all-time matchups between Duke and Louisville in program history have ended in draws.
The Blue Devils return home this week for a pair of home matchups to wrap up their regular season home slate. First, Duke will host Notre Dame, on Thursday, Oct. 24, for a 7 p.m. matchup, marking the team's annual pink game. The Blue Devils will conclude the weekend welcoming Syracuse to Koskinen Stadium, Sunday, Oct. 27, marking Senior Day for the 2019 Blue Devils.
