CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After a strong start Friday in the opening round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, the 12th-ranked Duke women's golf team slipped on the back nine at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Blue Devils carded a five-under-par front nine that featured eight birdies and Duke led the field heading to the back nine. Duke struggled the rest of the way with an eight-over-par ledger on the final nine holes to fall to tied for ninth overall with 36 holes remaining.

Duke, the champion at the Tar Heel Invitational in five out of the last six years, posted a five-over, 293, and trails leader Wake Forest, 282, by 11 strokes. Kentucky (283), Alabama (283), North Carolina (284), Ohio State (284), Michigan State (286), Charlotte (288), Furman (289), South Carolina (293), Duke (293) and Michigan (293) round out the top 11 teams.

Junior Jaravee Boonchant continued her solid play with a one-under-par, 71, and is tied for 15th heading into Saturday's second round. A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Boonchant missed the fairway on her opening hole and made bogeys on No. 1 and No. 4 to start her day. The two-time All-America regrouped and strung together three straight birdies to close the front nine. Boonchant posted a 12-foot birdie on No. 7 and No. 8, before rolling in a 15-footer for birdie on the 374-yard, par four ninth.

She featured seven consecutive pars to open the back nine, before holing a 27-foot birdie on the par five 17th. Boonchant couldn't get up-and-down from the bunker on No. 18 to close with a 71. She hit eight fairways, 14 greens and rolled 32 putts.

Also carding a one-under, 71, in the opening round was junior Miranda Wang. The Beijing, China native posted a team-best five birdies on the day, including three on the front nine. Wang parred the first three holes and then hit an excellent approach from under a tree to within 10 feet and drained the birdie to move to one-under. She then stuck her approach from 98 yards to two feet with her 50-degree wedge and made the birdie on No. 7. Wang hit her drive into the fairway bunker on No. 9, but stuck her approach from 135 yards to 12 feet and made the birdie. She made the turn at three-under and then was two-over on the back with birdies on No. 13 and No. 18. Wang hit 11 greens, nine fairways and had 28 putts.

"I was just staying calm through all 18 holes," commented Wang. "I was like 'Let's just be patient,' because it was not the first day that my driver was not going well. Since Chicago, my driver has not been that stable, so I was mentally prepared. I knew that I would hit some fairway bunkers, but I also did some practice shots during the practice round. The bunkers here, I think, are not that hard, so I was ready for it."

In her collegiate debut, freshman Megan Furtney had one of Duke's best starts to the day as she parred her first five holes. After a bogey on the par five sixth, Furtney rolled in a 15-foot birdie on No. 7 to return to even par. She added a 12-foot birdie on the 161-yard, par three eighth as she went on to make the turn at one-under, 35. On the back, Furtney parred the first four holes and then made a bogey on No. 14. She missed the fairway on No. 17 and went on to make triple-bogey, before finishing with a three-over, 75, Friday. Furtney hit seven fairways, 13 greens and had 34 putts.

Fellow freshman Erica Shepherd opened her round with nine pars, but was four-over-par on the back nine to finish with a 76. On the day, she hit 11 fairways, 13 greens and rolled 35 putts. Sophomore Gina Kim was also held without a birdie turning in a 77 Friday.

Duke is without the services of lone senior Ana Belac as she is getting set to compete in LPGA Stage II Qualifying in Venice, Fla.

Ohio State's Aneka Seumanutafa holds the individual lead with a six-under, 66.

Duke will tee off Saturday in the second round beginning at 9:09 a.m., off hole No. 10.
