CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Led by four under par rounds Saturday at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, the 12th-ranked Duke women's golf team carded a 16-under-par, 272, and jumped up the leaderboard into fifth place and only four strokes out of the lead.
The 272 was a team-best for the day and was one shot off the Duke school record of 271. The 16-under ledger was tied for the 16th lowest score in NCAA history. The previous low scores for the Blue Devils were also in the Tar Heel Invitational in 2017 and 2018. The 272 was also the fourth best team round in the Tar Heel Invitational history.
Kentucky holds the team lead with a 15-under, 561, while Wake Forest (562), Michigan State (563), Alabama (563), Duke (565), North Carolina (569), South Carolina (573), Ohio State (573), Furman (573) and Virginia (575) close out the top 10.
"Today was a lot of fun. Birdies are fun," said Duke head coach
Dan Brooks." And it was particularly nice to go low with many of our alums around for a reunion we're having this weekend. We've positioned ourselves well for tomorrow.
Junior
Jaravee Boonchant matched a career best in round two with a bogey-free, 66, to jump into the individual lead. Boonchant, who is from Bangkok, Thailand, holds a share of the individual lead with a seven-under, 137, along with Valery Plata of Michigan State and Aneka Seumanutafa of Ohio State.
Boonchant made birdies to start the day on No. 13 and No. 17 and made the turn at two-under, 34. She went on to add four birdies on the back nine to fire a six-under, 66. Boonchant collected birdies on No. 1, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 8.
Sophomore
Gina Kim found her groove Saturday and turned in a career-best six-under-par, 66, as she was bogey free with six birdies. A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kim opened the day with a birdie on No. 13 and then she hit her 8-iron from 132 yards to three feet on the 390-yard, par four 15th and made birdie. After making the turn with a two-under, 34, she played the back nine at four-under.
Kim got things going on No. 2 as she hit her 54-degree wedge to nine feet and made the birdie and then sank a 25-foot birdie on No. 3 to get to four-under. After a par on the fourth, Kim banged in two birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to get to six-under-par. She closed with three pars to finish with a 66. She missed only one green, hit 10 fairways and had 29 putts on the day.
"I think our team stayed really patient today and as for myself I stayed focused and committed to doing my routine and believing shot after shot that we have a chance to make a huge comeback and we did," commented Kim.
For the second time in her career, junior
Miranda Wang registered back-to-back under par rounds as she signed for a two-under, 70, Saturday with four birdies. She opened with birdies on No. 11 and No. 17, before making the turn at one-under, 35. Wang, who hails from Beijing, China, rolled in her third birdie of the day on No. 5 to get to three-under, but finished with a bogey on No. 9 to finish with a 70.
After opening her collegiate career Friday with a three-over, 75, freshman

She opened the day with a par and back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12. Furtney added her first birdie on the par five 13th and then returned to two-over with a bogey on No. 17. The rest of the day was bogey free for Furtney as she played her final 11 holes at four-under-par. She collected birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 9.
Freshman
Erica Shepherd had a career-best round going as she was two-under-par through 15 holes, but finished with bogey, par and double-bogey to finish with a one-over, 73. Shepherd, who is from Greenwood, Ind., opened the day with a bogey on No. 10, but would go on to play the next 14 holes at three-under as she drained a 48-foot birdie putt on the 165-yard, par three 14th, two-putted for birdie on the par five 17th and sank a nine-foot birdie on No. 4. She hit nine fairways, 15 greens and rolled 34 putts on the day.

The Blue Devils will tee off Sunday in the final round beginning at 9:15 a.m. in a shotgun start.
