DURHAM, N.C.—Duke senior
Daniele Proch scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season tonight as the 18th-ranked Blue Devils tied visiting Wright State, 2-2, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday.
The Blue Devils outshot Wright State (5-3-1) 24-17 for the game and were denied by the post twice in regulation en route to their first draw of the 2019 campaign. It also was the first overtime contest of the year for Duke.
Duke (5-3-1) dominated the time of possession in the first 45 minutes, moving the ball with ease all over the field. After a couple of early chances were off the mark, Proch gave the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead as he fired home a
Daniel Wright pass from 12 yards out. Proch has either scored or assisted on nine of Duke's 17 goals this season.
The Blue Devils continued to control play for the final 30 minutes of the period, but couldn't break through for that important second goal.
With a 1-0 lead coming out of the break, Duke was looking for that dagger to help put away the Raiders. This time it was
Stephen O'Connell making a run down the left side to receive a pass. The junior defender, making his second career start, missed by inches as his left footed strike across the goal hit the woodwork and bounced out.
The Raiders started to grow in confidence as the second half wore on and tied the game in the 62nd minute after Duke was unable to clear the ball and Jackson Dietrich knocked it in for his third goal of the year.
"We got really loose with possession and we got really loose with our defending [in the second half]," said head coach
John Kerr. "[Wright State] stepped it up. They sensed an opportunity to seize the moment. Thankfully for us they didn't put one of those three or four opportunities away."
Duke bounced right back just 1:23 later with a spectacular free kick strike from Kristofer Gardarsson. Proch drew the foul about 25 yards from goal on top of the 18-yard box. The junior midfielder stepped behind the ball and perfectly curled the shot over the wall just inside the left post to put the Blue Devils back in front 2-1.
The frantic play continued 1:05 later as Deri Corfe capitalized on foul on the Blue Devils just outside the penalty area. From nearly the same spot as Gardarsson, Corfe had a little luck on his side as his shot deflected off the wall and beat Duke keeper
Will Pulisic who was going the other way and couldn't recover.
While the final score ended up 2-2, the last 45 minutes of the 110-minute contest was not without opportunities for both squads.
Proch hit the post for the Blue Devils again in the 82nd minute, while Pulisic made a fingertip save in the first overtime to assure a tie. Duke wasn't the only unlucky team on the field as Wright State hit the crossbar and the post in overtime.
Pulisic finished with four saves on the night, while Joel Sundell had seven.
Duke resumes ACC play Friday, Oct. 4 against Syracuse. Kickoff at Koskinen is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
