DURHAM, N.C. – As the Duke field hockey program commemorates Homecoming Weekend with a reunion in September, GoDuke.com will feature several Blue Devil alumnae to highlight memories from their collegiate careers and the paths they've taken to success in their professional fields.
Grace Christus, 2010-13
A four-year starter for the Blue Devils in the midfield, Christus played in 81 career contests before graduating from the university in 2014. She totaled 12 assists over her four seasons as an integral member of Duke's offensive penalty corner unit. The Bernardsville, N.J., native tallied her first career goal in thrilling fashion as a senior, scoring in the final minute of regulation at Boston College. That tally sent the match to overtime in an eventual Duke victory. Christus was a member of a senior class that helped guide the program to the NCAA championship match for the first time since 2005.
A political science major at Duke and a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, Christus now resides in New York City, where she works at Citi. Her role at Citi is in Consumer Marketing on the Global Integration team focused on global brand marketing, partnerships and experiences.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time at Duke?
Grace Christus: Our tournament run in 2013 to the national championship – from hosting the first two rounds at home on our field, to beating Maryland in the semifinals to get into the title game. Those few weeks in November are some of the most exciting and memorable moments of my life with such a special group of players, coaches and staff.
What was your favorite spot on campus?
GC: The Chapel – every time I drive up to it or walk by it, as an undergrad and now as an alum, I just get that 'wow' feeling and is a reminder of how proud I am to be a Blue Devil for life.
What was your favorite class at Duke?
GC: Business of Sport with Ed T. Awesome class that got me interested in the role that brands play in the sponsorship space – for sports, music and all entertainment areas. This class really opened up my eyes to the power of sponsorships and why so many major brands want to be a part of what sports and entertainment mean to people.
Favorite food on campus?
GC: WaDuke, next question!
Who was a teammate who influenced you either on or off the field?
GC: Emmie Le Marchand – her intensity and hard work are second to none and it was really special to share our senior season together as teammates, roommates and friends. We pushed each other really hard all four years and especially as seniors, and to see our hard work pay off in 2013 and to pave the way for our younger teammates has always meant a lot to me.
What advice would you give to current or future Blue Devils?
GC: My advice to future Blue Devils is pretty simple: show up and work hard. These are two important things you have complete control over and they usually have a positive impact on things you don't have control over. Show up to practice, to games, to meetings, to class. Show up for your friends, your family, your teammates, your coaches. People who are accountable and who give 110 percent effort always make an impact.
