DURHAM, N.C.— Duke University women's basketball freshman Uchenna Nwoke arrived on campus in Durham recently and is getting adjusted to college life. Get to know this rookie from Grand Prairie, Texas, who will be suiting up for the Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2018-19.
What are you most excited for about being at Duke?
BASKETBALL SEASON OF COURSE!! Also meeting new people and being in a new atmosphere.
Why did you decide to come to Duke?
Because the academics are obviously great, but to have a great basketball program as well; it was definitely a win, win in my book.
What is something not many people know about you?
When I was younger, the adults at my church didn't like me playing in the children's room because they said it was for children five years old and below and that I look like a 10-year-old. I wasn't 10. I was just a BIG five-year-old.
Which Duke player currently in the WNBA is your favorite?
Lexie Brown
When did you start playing basketball? What made you love the game?
Seventh Grade (age 12). I had a lot of people that really wanted to help me reach the potential that I have because of my alarming size. I had so many people that believed in me so I started to believe in myself. That's when I started to work on my game by myself and fall in love with the game.
For those that don't know much about your game, what kind of player are you and what will you try to bring to the court for Duke?
I am what people call a "True 5." I am a back to the basket player who loves to post up, score and get rebounds. That means you won't be seeing me bring the ball up the court, but you will be seeing me block the ball into the stands. What I will try to bring to the court is strength and communication. I will do my best to call every screen and always box out.
What is your proudest moment of your basketball career so far?
My proudest moment occurred during a playoff game in high school. The girl that I was guarding from the other team was friends with one of my teammates and told her how their team had a plan to shut me down and make sure that I barely score. When my teammate told me this I laughed and said "oohhhkkkaaay" to sum it up I was the second leading scorer on my team that game with 17 rebounds and 16 points.
What is your proudest moment off the court?
I can't choose one specifically, but I know what makes me the proudest is when I do random acts of kindness. From something big like signing up to mentor little kids or something small like giving a nervous freshman a ride home when they were about to walk.
Who are your biggest inspirations on and off the court?
On the court my biggest inspiration is Shaq because of the simple fact that he was a BEAST and people were scared to go against him. Off the court my biggest inspiration is Beyoncé because when she walks into a room people sit up. She is a celebrity to other celebrities and I look up to her a lot.
