Blue Devils Finish ACC Play with Sweep of UVA

DURHAM, N.C. – A three-run third inning sandwiched between a run in both the second and fourth were enough to send the Duke Blue Devils (29-23, 13-11 ACC) to a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon, completing a sweep of the Virginia Cavaliers (12-39, 3-21 ACC) to wrap up ACC play for the inaugural season.
Jameson Kavel opened the scoring in the second with a single up the middle that drove home Reilly Metzger to make it 1-0 in favor of the Blue Devils. Duke added on three more an inning later thanks to a two-RBI triple from Raine Wilson and an RBI single from Amelia Wiercioch. Dominique Salinas opened the frame with a one-out walk and made her way to third on a foul out to left and a wild pitch. Haley Wymbs would then draw a walk on a full count to set up Wilson's second triple of the season that made it 3-0 for the Blue Devils.
A batter later, Wiercioch stepped in and sent the first pitch she saw up the middle to score Wilson and make it 4-0 Duke after three.
Virginia responded in the top of the fourth, reeling off three-straight singles to cut Duke's lead down to 4-1. Wiercioch, who entered in relief after the second base hit of the inning, forced two groundouts and a line out to stop the Cavalier rally in its tracks.
Duke would add one last run in the home half of the fourth, as Salinas singled up the middle and sent pinch runner Makenna Lutterloh home to make it 5-1. From there, the Blue Devils were able to keep UVA at bay as Peyton St. George entered in the sixth, allowing just two hits over the final two frames to secure the victory and the sweep.
Wiercioch picked up the win, improving to 11-10 this season after going 2.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out one. Katherine Huey earned the start, throwing 3.0 innings and striking out one.
The Blue Devils will split time on the road and at home for the final weekend of the regular season. Duke will travel to Farmville, Va., for a doubleheader against Longwood on Saturday, May 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, with game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The regular season will close out at home on Sunday, May 6 against Campbell, first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
