DURHAM, N.C. – With the threat of extra innings drawing near, Duke was in need of a spark heading into the seventh. In came Peyton St. George, who picked up two strikeouts and then delivered a walk-off single to right center to send the Blue Devils (27-23, 11-11 ACC) to a 3-2 victory in the series opener against the Virginia Cavaliers (12-37, 3-19 ACC) Friday afternoon at the Duke Softball Stadium.
After working the Blue Devils out of a jam in the sixth, St. George swung the momentum back to the home side with two major strikeouts to strand a UVA runner. A one-out double from Raine Wilson set the tone for the Blue Devils' turn at the plate in the seventh. After Wilson was moved to third on a groundout, St. George stepped in the box for her first at-bat and sent the first pitch to right center, scoring Wilson and securing Duke's fifth walk-off win of the season.
Not only did St. George deliver the walk-off win, but she also picked up her eighth victory of the season and improved to 6-0 in the circle in ACC play with a 1.50 ERA.
Duke wasted no time in getting the scoring started, as a Virginia error would push Rachel Abboud across home plate to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 advantage. Abboud drew the leadoff walk and was moved to second on a single from Jameson Kavel. That brought Amelia Wiercioch to the dish, who reached on a throwing error by the Cavaliers that allowed Abboud to score.
Katherine Huey, who earned her 17th start of the season, retired the Cavaliers in order in the second, tallying two of her three strikeouts in the process. However, UVA would break through in the third, using Duke's lone error of the game and a single to left to set up a sac fly to even things at 1-1. That would not last long, as Huey led off the bottom of the fourth with a monster shot just right of the foul pole in left to record her third homer of the season and push Duke back in front, 2-1.
An RBI single in the sixth would tie things back up at 2-2 and give the Cavaliers significant momentum before St. George came in to shut down the visitors the rest of the way out.
St. George's walk-off single was one of nine Duke hits on the day. Wilson and Haley Wymbs each tallied a two-hit showing, with Wilson reeling in her team-leading 13th double and Wymbs now tallying a multi-hit performance in three-straight games.
