BLACKSBURG, Va. – A standout day from Reilly Metzger, highlighted by a fourth-inning single that drove in the game's winning run, led the Duke Blue Devils (26-23, 10-11 ACC) to a 5-0 victory, giving them the series win at Virginia Tech (20-27, 6-14 ACC) Sunday afternoon.
The win gives Duke back-to-back ACC series wins for the first time in program history, as the Blue Devils took the series at Notre Dame last weekend with wins in the first two contests. Sunday's victory also clinches Duke's spot in the 2018 ACC Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., May 9-12.
As it has been for most of the weekend, offense was hard to come by for either side in the early stages of the contest, with only three combined hits through the first three innings. Duke broke through in the fourth thanks to Metzger's RBI single. Wymbs got things started with a leadoff single up the middle. Raine Wilson followed with a single of her own and then the duo executed a double steal to put runners at second and third with no outs. A walk to Amelia Wiercioch loaded the bases and brought up Metzger, who tallied her first RBI since March 2 against North Dakota State to give Duke the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils tacked on an insurance run in the fifth, as Ashleigh Rodriguez reached in the leadoff spot thanks to a throwing error on the Hokies. A sac bunt and a groundout moved Rodriguez over to third and Wilson's second hit of the day brought her home to make it 2-0 in favor of the Blue Devils.
After Katherine Huey sat the Hokies down in order for the second-straight inning, the Blue Devils fired up the bats in the sixth with a three-run frame. Wiercioch led things off with a single to right center and Metzger delivered her second hit of the day to put two on with no outs for Duke. Pinch-hitter Emilie Cieslak put the ball in play to the first baseman, who misfired on the throw home, allowing pinch-runner Makenna Lutterloh to score and make it 3-0 Duke. A single up the middle from Jazmine Moreno brought two more runs home, pushing the Blue Devils out to a 5-0 advantage.
Huey (9-7) picked up the win, her second in ACC play. The righty threw 5.2 innings, striking out two and walking just one while allowing no runs on three hits. Peyton St. George entered in the sixth and held the Hokies in check for the remainder of contest, sealing the 5-0 victory and series win behind one strikeout and one hit allowed in 2.0 innings.
Duke finished with eight hits on the day, headlined by Metzger's 2-for-3 day at the plate that also included a run batted in and a run scored. It was Metzger's third multi-hit game of the season and first since recorded two hits in the second game against North Carolina on March 10. Haley Wymbs and Wilson also recorded two-hit days, with Wilson driving in one run to improve her season total to 28 RBI. Wymbs has now tallied multi-hit performances in back-to-back games and has seven on the year, while Wilson upped her team-leading total to 17.
Moreno led all players with a pair of RBI on her sixth-inning single, giving her three multi-RBI games this season.
With the final ACC road series in the books, the Blue Devils will now turn their attention to a Wednesday, April 25 doubleheader at Longwood to wrap up their road slate for year one. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ET in Farmville, Va., with game two to follow approximately 30 after the conclusion of the first contest.
