ORLANDO, Fla. - The Duke Blue Devils (7-4) opened their time at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., with a split, shutting out Morgan State, 5-0, in the day's first game before falling 3-1 to No. 23 Kentucky to close out Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Jameson Kavel's first-career home run, along with a 2-for-3 day from Jill Ferraro in her first action of the year were the difference in the day's first game, as the Blue Devils shut down the Bears, 5-0. Peyton St. George threw a complete game to earn the first win of her career, holding a no-hitter through 5.2 innings and allowing just three base hits in the contest.
After St. George used a pair of strikeouts to put the Bears down in order in the first, Kavel led things off with a single up the middle, followed by a steal and a Morgan State error to move her to third. Rachel Abboud would record her team-leading third sacrifice fly to bring Kavel home and give Duke a 1-0 lead.
St. George recorded six of her 12 strikeouts, a Duke single-game record, to retire her first 13 batters before MSU finally put a runner on via walk. That would be short lived as another strikeout and a fly out would close down the top of the fifth, setting up Duke's three-run home half of the frame.
Ashleigh Rodriguez drew a one-out walk to bring up Kavel, who went yard to left field for the first bomb of her career and Duke's third on the season. After the two-run shot made it 3-0, MSU's second error of the day allowed Abboud to reach base and eventually driven home thanks to an RBI single from Ferraro.
Up 4-0, Duke added one last insurance run, as Dominique Salinas swiped second and third base before coming home on an error on the Bears' catcher. With the lead at 5-0, St. George would close out her complete game shutout behind a popup and the final two punchouts of her night, capping Duke's fifth-straight win.
The day's second game provided the Blue Devils with their first top 25 foe in program history, as the Wildcats entered the day ranked 23rd nationally. For the seventh time this season, Duke struck in the opening frame, with once again Kavel representing the squad's first run. After a leadoff walk, Kavel reached second on an error by the Wildcats' third baseman, eventually driven home on a groundout to make it 1-0 for the Blue Devils.
That lead would only stand for one inning, as Kentucky tied things up in the second with a solo home run to left center, marking just the third homer surrendered this season and the first in nine games. Kentucky tacked on two more in the fourth and another pair of runs in the sixth to make it a 5-1 advantage. Katherine Huey tallied a one-out double in the seventh to try and spark a Blue Devil comeback, but the Wildcats forced a groundout and line out to wrap up the contest, handing Duke its first loss in nearly two weeks.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday with contests against Savannah State (10 a.m. ET) and Harvard (3 p.m. ET). Both games will be live streamed on FloSoftball.com with a paid subscription.
