DURHAM, N.C. –Duke head coach John Danowski and has announced the 2019 men's lacrosse schedule, featuring eight home games. The Blue Devils will play 14 regular season games with six of those coming against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams.
Duke Ranked in Face-Off Yearbook Division I Preseason Poll
The Blue Devils will open the season ranked second in the Face-Off Yearbook Division I preseason poll. The Face-Off Yearbook is published annually in conjunction with Inside Lacrosse, the nation's premier lacrosse website. Reigning NCAA Champion Yale tops the poll, while Maryland, Loyola and Cornell round out the top five.
2019 Highlights
Coming off of a NCAA runner-up finish, Duke's 2019 slate features numerous highlights, including a home game with perennial power Denver Feb. 16 and the annual battle with Loyola at Koskinen Stadium March 8 at 4 p.m. In the ACC, it is Notre Dame and Virginia's turn to visit Durham April 6 and April 13, respectively. Both games are slated for noon faceoffs.
Duke Debuts on the Road
The Blue Devils open the 2019 season on the road at Furman, Feb. 2. Danowski will be going for his 400th career victory when the Blue Devils face off against the Paladins for the second time in the programs' histories. A win for Duke would made Danowski the first Division I coach and third across all three divisions to amass 400 career victories. The Blue Devils bested Furman 19-4 in the lone meeting in 2014.
Annual February Battle with Penn Awaits
Duke's annual battle against Ivy League foe Penn is set for Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. The Quakers, led by former Blue Devil Mike Murphy, got the better of the Blue Devils last season in Philadelphia and are 3-3 against Duke in the six matchups since 2010.
Growing the Game with the Utes
The Division I men's lacrosse world grew west by one team this spring as Utah joins the ranks. Duke will welcome the Utes, led by Brian Holman – father to former UNC standout Marcus Holman, March 12 at 7 p.m.
Towson Leads Duke into ACC Play
Duke will host a tough Towson program March 16 prior to kickoff ACC play the following weekend. The Blue Devils edged the Tigers 10-8 on the road in 2018. It is just the third time the two program under Danowski. Duke is sandwiched in a tough stretch of three games against Cornell and Denver for the Tigers.
ACC Play Opens at Syracuse
The Blue Devils, following a three-game home stretch, open conference action on the road at Syracuse. The Orange has won the previous two games by a single goal both times and is 5-2 in the seven meetings as ACC foes.
Our Blue is Best Lacrosse Style
The Duke and UNC lacrosse rivalry will be March 30 in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils won an 11-10 thriller at Koskinen Stadium in 2018 and are a commanding 16-4 against the Tar Heels under Danowski. North Carolina, after missing the NCAA Tournament a year ago, are ranked 16th in the preseason poll.
Opening April in Koskinen
Duke opens April in the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium with Notre Dame and Virginia. The Blue Devils look to avenge the ACC Tournament loss to the Irish last season and aim to continue the dominance over the Cavaliers. In one of the stranger stats in lacrosse, Duke is an incredible 17-1 against Virginia since 2007. The lone loss came in the 2010 ACC Tournament, while nine of the wins have come by at least five goals. The matchup with Notre Dame has been a seesaw battle with Duke holding a narrow 6-5 advantage since the Irish joined the ACC.
Long Island Return
Duke returns to the roots of the Danowski family to finish out the regular season. The Blue Devils will play Marquette in Bethpage, N.Y., with the game starting at 11 a.m. The two squads have played in each of the past six seasons with Duke winning all six contests. The Blue Devils return to Bethpage for the second time in the past three seasons and for the third time for the Battle at Bethpage event.
ACC Championship Features New Format
The ACC Championship features a revamped format in 2019. Instead of the league's fifth-place team being left out, the No. 4 and No. 5 teams will square off April 25. The winner advances to play in the semifinals April 27. The ACC Championship game will be held May 4 at the highest remaining seed.
