DURHAM, N.C.—High Point buried a penalty kick in the 26th minute and held off a furious second-half charge from 14th-ranked Duke to upend the Blue Devils 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action at Koskinen Stadium Tuesday night. The loss ends Duke's win streak at four games.
Duke (8-4-1), unable to connect on passes and get into a rhythm, struggled to get into the game early on and allowed High Point (11-2-0) to generate some offense. The Panthers created a few dangerous opportunities inside the penalty box early on, but Duke's backline did well to defend and keep High Point from getting shots on frame.
“We didn't start well,” said head coach John Kerr. “But I thought we were good, not great. We didn't execute on a number of opportunities that we presented ourselves with so that's disappointing. We weren't at our best tonight.”
However, High Point finally got the chance it needed in the 26th minute by drawing a foul on the left side of the penalty area. Leading scorer Ilias Kosmidis stepped up to the spot and buried the shot for the 1-0 lead.
Duke, sacrificing just its sixth first-half goal, picked up its level of play following the goal and nearly equalized on a Seth Kuhn header that sailed just over the bar in the 29th minute. Max Moser, who came off the bench to provide a spark, had the best chance of the night in the 42nd minute.
The junior midfielder used a great first touch to beat a High Point defender and ripped a shot to the far post that beat High Point goalie Keegan Meyer, but was denied by the post to send Duke into the locker room trailing for just the second time all season.
The second 45 minutes was all Blue Devils as they attacked furiously and generated numerous scoring opportunities. Rookie Issa Rayyan gave the Panthers fits on the right side and Daniel Wright and Daniele Proch also had scoring chances, but couldn't find the back of the net.
Despite dominating the run of play, High Point's defense did what it needed to do in block shots, clearing away corner kicks and remaining composed to hand Duke the loss.
Duke outshot High Point 11-2 in the first half, but only put two of those 11 on frame. Meyer finished with two saves in the 90 minutes, while Duke keeper Will Pulisic did not have to make a save. Overall, the Blue Devils outshot High Point 20-6 and had a 14-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Blue Devils resume ACC play Friday against Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra. Duke's five seniors will be honored prior to the game.
