DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman Kelly Chen was selected as the ACC Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week following her 2-1 week at the Rainbow Invitational.
Chen teamed with senior Samantha Harris to win their only doubles match of the week. Chen and Harris defeated Pepperdine's Evgeniya Levashova and Dzina Milovanovic 7-5.
Chen split her two singles matches. On the first day of the Rainbow Invite, Chen fell to Pepperdine's 31st-ranked Mayer Sharif 6-4, 6-2. She bounced back the next day. She dropped the first set against Pepperdine's 28th-ranked Ashley Lahey, but won the final two sets to win 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4 for Duke's first victory over a ranked opponent this spring.
The duo of Chen and Harris is currently the top-ranked doubles tandem in the International Tennis Association's (ITA) poll and are 10-2, including 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents. Chen also checks in on the ITA singles poll, ranking 58th. She is 13-6 so far this season.
The Blue Devils begin the dual match season portion of their season on Wednesday when they host Elon in Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
