Ground Ball Notebook: Duke Extends 2017 Season

Inside Lacrosse Announces Inaugural All-America Teams
Junior attackman Justin Guterding headlined the three Duke selections to the first edition of the Inside Lacrosse All-America teams. Guterding garnered third team honors, while Thomas Zenker and Cade Van Raaphorst earned honorable mention. The three teams are compiled by more than 30 members of the lacrosse media who vote in the weekly Maverik Media Poll and are in tune with the national college lacrosse landscape week to week.

Numbers Behind Duke's Dominating Win
The Blue Devils were completely dominant in all facets of the game at Johns Hopkins. The 19-6 setback matched the Blue Jays' worst loss in NCAA history, tying it the 18-5 setback to the Blue Devils in the 2010 opening round. The 13-goal loss was the worst suffered by Johns Hopkins at Homewood field since 1954 and also marked the first time since 1991 and the first time under Dave Pietramala it had lost an NCAA Tournament game at home.

Joey Manown recorded a career-high four goals and five points, while Sean Lowrie had his second career hat trick and matched his career-best with four points. Duke's second midfield had four of the Blue Devils first eight goals of the game.

Duke shot 51 percent in the victory over the Blue Jays, its second best shooting outing this season behind the 52.3 percent against Cleveland State. Defensively, Duke held Johns Hopkins to just six goals, its second lowest total all season. The Blue Jays shot just 24 percent, marking the 11th time this season the Blue Devils have held their opponents to under 30 percent shooting.

Ethan Powley with a Big 24 Hours
In just over a 24-hour span, senior longstick midfielder Ethan Powley made memories both on and off the field that will last him a lifetime. Prior to departing Durham for Baltimore, Powley, a four-year member of the Navy ROTC program at Duke, was officially commissioned into the United States Navy. The Wake Forest, N.C., native was sworn in by his father as the emotions ran high in seeing him accomplish the incredible goal. Then just 24 hours later on the lacrosse field, he helped Duke put together one of its finest defensive performances of the year in holding Johns Hopkins to just six goals and 24 percent shooting. He recorded a season-high three caused turnovers and three ground balls in the win and is just four ground balls away from reaching 100 for his career.

Guterding Joins Elite Company
Guterding join an elite group Saturday with 10 points in Duke's opening round win over Johns Hopkins. He joined Zack Greer and Matt Danowski as the only Blue Devils to record double-digit points in a NCAA Tournament game. Greer holds the record with 11 in the 2008 NCAA quarterfinal win over Ohio State. Greer and Danowski both had 10 in the 2007 quarterfinal win over North Carolina.

The Quest for 100
With his 10 points, Guterding pushed his season points total to 94, leaving him six shy of becoming just the second Blue Devil and the 17th player in Division I history to reach the century mark. His current total ranks tied for fifth and is nine away from tying record-holder Jordan Wolf's 103. Guterding currently owns 44 assists, fifth in Duke single season history, while his 50 goals are tied for 11th. Only Tewaaraton Award winners Ned Crotty and Matt Danowski have more assists in a season.

Rowe Moves Up in NCAA Records Book
Duke faceoff specialist Kyle Rowe won 18 faceoffs this past Saturday to push his career wins total to 807 and making him just the seventh player in NCAA history to reach the 800-win benchmark. In addition, Rowe picked up 15 ground balls to move to fourth in the NCAA records book with 494.

Looking Ahead to Ohio State in NCAA Quarterfinals
Duke and Ohio State are meeting for the third time in NCAA Tournament history. Both squads have a win under their belts, with the Blue Devils beating the Buckeyes 21-10 in the 2008 quarterfinals and Ohio State sending Duke out in the first round 16-11 in 2015. Duke is 10-4 all-time in the NCAA quarterfinals, while the Buckeyes are 0-3 as they search for their first NCAA semifinal appearance. The two previously met this season nearly four months ago in a Jan. 28 in a scrimmage in Durham.

Duke's NCAA History in Hempstead
Saturday marks the fourth time in Duke history the Blue Devils have played in an NCAA quarterfinal game inside Shuart Stadium at Hofstra. Duke is 0-3 in those contests with the most recent being a 10-9 setback to Syracuse in 2002. This marks the first time under head coach John Danowski the Blue Devils have played at Danowski's former school in an NCAA quarterfinal.

Battle at the X
Saturday's game will pit two of the nation's top faceoff men as Ohio State's Jake Withers and Duke's Kyle Rowe square off. Withers, sporting a 67 percent success rate at the X, is third nationally, while Rowe is 13th at 60 percent. Both are adept at picking up ground balls, ranking in the top 10. Rowe is eighth at 8.33 ground balls per game and Withers is ninth with 7.28. Ohio State's Withers has won at least 50 percent of his draws in 16 of the 18 games and Rowe has won over half in 12 of his 16 outings. Duke is 2-2 in the four games where Rowe didn't win half of his faceoffs and Ohio State is 2-0.

Long Island Home Coming
For the second time in a three-week span, a host of Blue Devils, including head coach John Danowski, will return home to Long Island. Danowski and assistant coach Ron Caputo will return to familiar territory in Hofstra. Danowski was the head coach for the Pride for 21 seasons, while Caputo was an assistant coach with Danowski from 2003-06. Danowski's daughter still resides in Bethpage and teaches at Bethpage. Among the players returning to their roots are Jack Bruckner, Sean Cerrone, Brian Dunne, Jack and Danny Fowler, Justin Guterding, and Tommy Zenker. Five of those hail from Chaminade High School, while Guterding attended Garden City and Bruckner Ward Mellville.
