DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno and the Duke rowing program are excited to announce the signing of Katherine Lustig to a National Letter of Intent. Lustig is a senior at Council Rock High School in Newtown, Pa., where she is four-year member of the rowing program.
Lustig, a three-year letterwinner for the varsity program, received Honorable Mention USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll accolades as a senior.
She helped her club, Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA-Mercer), to first place at the U17 Canadian Henley in the 8+ during her freshman year. Lustig broke out in her sophomore year, helping the V4+ to 12th at the Head of the Charles and V8+ to first at the Mid-Atlantic Regionals. The V8+ then took second nationally at the Youth National Rowing Championships during her sophomore year.
As a junior, Lustig received third place in the V8+ at the Head of the Charles and repeated in first in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the V8+. The V8+ then took fourth at the Youth Nationals.
So far her senior year, the V8+ claimed 13th at the Head of the Charles.
"Katherine comes from one of the top junior rowing programs in the country PNRA-Mercer," assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chase Graham said. "The program, however, did not start out on top. It had to work its way up the ranks. Katherine was a big part of this building process, which makes her a great fit for Duke and our incoming class. Her three years as a key member of the varsity 8 will be a great foundation for success at the next level. She has a wonderful sense of humor, but don't let that fool you, she is a fierce competitor who wants to win. One of the first questions she asked was, 'Where do you see the program in four years?'"
"I loved the diverse opportunities available to students and the culture of the Duke rowing team," Lustig said on why she chose Duke.
Away from rowing, Lustig is a National Honor Society member, Rho Kappa Honor Society selection and Special Olympics coach. She has also participated in numerous community service events during her high school career.
